What car battery

So the (original) battery in my 15 year old mondeo estate 2.0 needs replacing, what brand do people recommend, I was looking at the halfords own brand ones with a 3 or 4 year guarantee.

With a 2 litre engine do I need a higher starting power amp battery?

I've had very good life out of an Exide car battery. Heard Varta (and Bosch, which is actually a Varta battery under the sticker) are also good.

The two numbers you need to look out for on the search results from ECP or CarParts4Less the are CCA and the Ah ratings.
  • Go on eurocarparts and enter your REG number and check.

According to what you have said, I think you need the 063 type battery. Go for the Bosch S4

Hello darkmatter, you're everywhere aren't you?

It will be an 075 battery and you should try your nearest motor factor. It is the second most popular battery (the 063 is number one) and it has been a very mild winter and they will be discounting to get rid.

2L petrol? Get a decent one like the Bosch S5 or Varta equivalent. They are designed for cars with high drain items like heated windscreens.

Yuasa batteries also get a good name.

One thing to remember is all the companies mentioned will make batteries of different quality. So on a 15 year old Mondeo do you really want the expensive option?

I think I would be looking at the cheapest option on a car of that age.

Halfords will be more expensive. Example for my car: £110 for Halfords, £69 Bosch at Andrew Page

How do you come to that conclusion?

It may not be a 063. It could be anything. It's a Ford with probably a Smart Charge system requiring a particular type of silver calcium battery?

An S4 might well be appropriate, but you can't just make a snap judgement and give advice without knowledge; get it wrong and well done, you could have just cost someone a new alternator and battery.

The only car batteries darkmatter knows about are the AA's for the hand controller.

Try Halfords online - they have a battery matching utility I think.
