European cities which are good for photographers

OH is 40 later this year and I want to use my Avios to take him away without the kids for the weekend, where he can take photos to his hearts content.

Which are the most beautiful cities to visit in your opinion?

Barcelona is the place I'm currently looking at.

We've been to Venice, Rome, Florence, Athens, Paris, Bruges, Lisbon in the past 15 years - his camera is much better now, so would a revisit to one of these be better than a trip to Barcelona?

Thanks in advance

Istanbul! You can take some amazing pics from the Asian side with the Blue Mosque etc in the background. The Grand Bazaar gives you so many photo ops of the lanterns. The fish market by the Bosporous on an evening is also great for pics, I got some fabulous ones there. Then you have the spices at the spice market, there is a street full of fish restaurants and a lovely picturesque street called French Street iirc. I've been to Istanbul twice now and it's one of the few places (along with Amsterdam and Berlin) that I could keep going back to.

I'm not a fan of Barcelona, I prefer Madrid or Lisbon. Madrid is better for more tapas, drinks and less pickpockets and Lisbon is good for custard tarts and a trip to Sintra (I'm too old for the late night drinking of not going out until midnight in Lisbon now).

I recently stayed on a houseboat in Amsterdam which I can also recommend if you want something a bit different.

Prague is gorgeous. And though it's not Europe it's as easy to get to and very affordable, Morocco - Marrakech has the most amazing sights - our camera got so much use when we were there we ended up buying an extra memory card (already had 3) to cope

Valencia - a mixture of narrow streets and old buildings in the old city; modern architecture and landscape in the recovered river valley; a nice zoo if you want animal pictures and a gorgeous beach.
  • Lisbon. :)
You can't beat the place when it comes to snapping away.
I go there fairly often and always have my camera at hand. Or any other place for that sake. :p

If you like Barcelona, then you will also like Palma, Majorca.

It is called by some a ' Little Barcelona' as there are many similar buildings, all around the city. I Love the architecture there, the Cathedral is Beautiful, the many official buildings a wonder, the people great and the hotels a good quality.

15 minutes away and you have a beach view, the Soller railway is great and scenery fantastic all the way through the mountains.

Well worth a visit and you may find hotels at good prices too.
  • A friend of mine mentioned Dubrovnik this morning, a beautiful old walled city. She specifically mentioned that it was a photographers paradise. I've not been, but it's on my list now!

+1 for Prague - avoid the weekend stag parties though.

Coming from the already beautiful Bath, I was blown away, so many pretty buildings and vistas, some great public art, economical, friendly.
  • My top five: Krakow; Prague; Palma; Valencia and Assisi
All have beautiful buildings and history. Ideal for a keen photographer.
    Normal people worry me.
  • There are very few capital/ major cities that wont have some interest for a photographer into architecture/ candid photos unless they are into something very niche.
