  • But do you? My licence is old enough to have the additional categories such as towing, but Marley's licence (four years ago) doesn't have those categories. So if I were to lose my licence and have to re-take the test, would I definitely get all the categories back or would it be treated as a new licence?

That would be down to the DVLA not losing entitlements, yes you can still tow a trailer until they lose the records, same as those who moved home and lost motorcycle entitlements. You can never account fir their mistakes, quite how they get away with destroying records so quickly I will never know. They don't seem to keep anything for longer than a couple of years.

Yeah under the terms of a provisional, if you are ddtp you must sit out a ban before you can drive again as a provisional.
After your license is revoked under the new driver act for reaching 6 points, it is revoked indefinitely until such time you make an application for a provisional, once the provisional is issued it will come with the 6 points added to it from the previous revoked license, then when you pass your test it is added to the full license, and the probationary starts again but you don't have wiggle room of 6 points any endorsement on the already endorsed Full license will earn another revoke.

If your past the probationary and get done for something the courts don't like and impose you resit your test, you make an application for provisional then retake the test to get license paper counterpart will have date of issue when the original was issued on it and in the endorsments section of the paper part it will list the ban period photo card will have second pass date on it.

those with no retake test order, will have to re-apply for their full license back, like above it will original issue date on paper part, in the endorsement section duration of ban date from and to. the photo card will have the issue date of when you passed second test.

its better explained in this link http://www.drivingban.co.uk/drivingban/drivingbannewdrivers.htm#I_already_have_6_penalty_points_on_my_provisional_licence._Can_I_actually_take_a_driving_test_and_if_I_pass,_will_my_licence_be_revoked_immediately_the_full_licence_is_issued

No. The probationary period does NOT start again, and you can't have your licence revoked twice. However, you would still have six points and be well on the way towards a totting-up ban.

The probationary period starts from the FIRST occasion on which you pass a test. See the Road Traffic (New Drivers) Act 1995, section 1(2).

You quote me, say exactly the same thing in a long winded way and provide a link.

What point were you trying to make?

Six points is a revocation not a ban.

You can apply for a new licence and drive straight away
    .
you do realize this reads as relating to new drivers don't you? no further explanation as usual. and you wonder where people are coming from. its your lack of explanation that leads to crossed information.

Well since the OP said test passed in 1989 I'd say it's covered in #8, wouldn't you?

There are of course other revocations that are simply admin matters whilst you are driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence the offence is not endorsable and therefore no points. These as you know are for such matters as not sending a licence back to have points put on. Your licence can also show as expired when you fail to act on the revocation.

Could be interesting/confusing as the paper counterpart will be abolished in June this year.

So, reading the posts, it appears that if a person were to pass their test in, say, 1992, and then loose it in 2015 with a requirement to re-take their test, they would retain their categories from the old original license.

Btw, for the record, my license is squeaky-clean and always has been.
The question was retorical and was asked as my niece's knob-head of a fella managed to not only pick-up 6 points for driving without insurance once in the first 2 years of driving, but twice. This lead to a 6-month ban and he is now free to take his test gain.
    Never Knowingly Understood.

So he got done for no insurance, had his licence revoked and whilst being a provisional licence holder was caught again?
