    Have you thought about Billericay?,
    Expensive though.

I think you are looking in exactly the right geography to keep your job options open as London is always going to be an attractive place to work, and would definitely stick to an area that gets you into Fenchurch Street and Liverpool Street, ie v close to the City of London. Southend does both and is full of commuters. Expensive to take the train but it will be a much better quality of life than the dross in the East End. North Essex is cheaper than South because it's that bit furth away from London. Having said that there are cheap parts in South Essex but I wouldn't recommend them!

Otherwise, look at Kent - stations will take you into Victoria or London Bridge or both....my perception is that they are slower trains though.

Look for your dream job and go wherever it is. It doesn't hugely matter where you live; what you do and the people you do it with are more important.

Can I add to that, do it whilst still young enough to do it, as you are OP. Good luck
  • My OH is from the Rayleigh /Rochford area of Essex (outside of Southend) and there are loads of young professionals there, it's a nice safe area with nice restaurants and shops, with easy transport links to Liverpool Street. I'm in Tunbridge Wells in Kent which is also very nice, lots of jobs and a lovely area, still with easy links to London, Brighton and the Sussex coast, great schools, lovely parks. I think you can make friends or be lonely anywhere, it all depends on the person.
  • I used to live in Billericay, nice but not a lot going on there to be honest and a nightmare getting a seat on the train! If I were to live in Essex again I would consider Colchester or Southend, both good for commuting but a lot of things going on as well. I think Southend is particularly good for singles.

In Chelmsford have a look at Great Baddow, or the city centre where there are lots of new-build flats aimed at "young professionals". Also worth considering - Old Moulsham and Parts of Galleywood. Danbury is nice but about 5 miles further out.

Don't rule out Springfield all together. As with all towns and cities, you need to do research and have a good look around before viewing properties.

Good luck. I moved to Chelmsford from East London 21 years ago and have never regretted it for one second.

You were asking about ward names. If you either go on to gov.uk or to your local council website, you can follow links to show these council wards on maps - I don't know your area so can't help specifically.

If you want to be part of a community, pick a village rather than a large town.
  • Thanks everyone. Lots of great advice. I really appreciate it.

I have 2 requirements it would seem - First & foremost, I need to be somewhere that has jobs available so I don't have to commute into London.
I agree though, it would be good to be fairly close to London just incase the jobs tend to dry up whereever I may be.
(I lived in Hornchurch for some time, applied for local jobs but PA jobs were few & far between & the pay was pretty lousy locally speaking - very much a 'commute into London' place.
I also didn't really make many friends there).

Secondly, would be a small enough place that I can get to know people, & people are 'open' enough. I'm a Londoner born & bred but we aren't the friendliest of people! ;)
A town that is equipped with it's own hospital, cinema, that kind of thing.
I think I liked Crawely because it was a safe bet being an airport/industrial town, so always had jobs.
I lived on the outskirts so it was pretty quiet too. It had its good & bad wards, but everything was in close proximity.

I have family in Rayleigh, it's very nice there but people seem to commute into London from there in order to work.
    Tunbridge I will look into.
I have a friend in Colchester, so I will see what it's like there too. I watched a show the other day on Jaywick and that would be the nearest 'big' town for Jaywick folk - which put me off a little.

Sorry, I don't want to come accross as snobby. I'm from the east end so I'm anything but! - but you get where I'm coming from (hopefully!).
  • Just be aware that Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells are 2 different towns when doing your research :)

I live in Essex and there are lots of nice places to live. I would rather live in London personally but that's a long story!

Chelmsford is nice - look at Writtle, Old Moulsham (bit expensive though), Galleywood. Billericay is also nice but quieter than Chelmsford. Other places: Colchester, Brentwood, Epping, Ongar, Southend. Leigh on Sea I think is really lovely. Some really nice shops, lots of restaurants, bars, cafes etc. Also nice to live by the sea
