Windows updates driving me mad

I have posted about this before, but it is slightly different this time.
I used to get Windows updates at the end of my session when I was closing down.
However, yesterday and today, I looked at the hidden icons on the botton taskbar (Windows 7), and Windows updates was in operation. The PC is now really slow, the Windows updates have been going for the past 30 minutes and only 4% complete:eek:
This is very nearly making my PC unusable.
I have just gone into task manager and there is an EXE file at the botton to do with Windows updates - should I end the process?
The CPU chart is coming on as well saying that I am using 85% of whatever it is?
Is my PC about to die, or is it just a matter of managing these updates in a different way?

How much free disk space do you have ?Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.0 -
There was an update recently (I think it may have been last week) that did take a long time to apply, and showed only a small percentage complete for a long time before suddenly finishing.0

A large number of updates have been released this week .
I generally install in small batches rather than all at once.0 -

It’s downloading not installing.
Once its finished downloading It will install at end of your session, or if you tell it to.
Yes you can kill off the exe.0 -

I'm not completely convinced, why would downloading an update require 85% of CPU? Of course, that could be completely unrelated to the update, but if it's not then it's much more likely that it would be installation using resources.0 -
Well yes it may have been installing if you have Windows Updates set to Install Updates Automatically, change it to Let Me Choose0

I have 163GB left out of 455GB. I also did a clean up the other week and disabled some start programmes to try and help matters which it did intil the latest updates started to come through.
There are none in the background at the moment and everything seems nice and smooth.0 -

Hmm still got some overhead there, don't let it get to 80%+ full as it really starts to fall off for system performance after that. The more full they get, the more the performance does drop off especially with lots of small files. It's a good idea if you have lots of data files on one disk to consider separate partitions for the OS/Programs and your user data, there are pros and cons.
See this wikipedia page:

If there is are .NET updates they can be a bit slow to complete, they used to be notorious for screwing up too.Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.0
