Raised INR, received refund, left negative - now item has arrived

On 12th January I bought a CD for £8.50 from a German seller.

Seller had 4,700 feedback, 99.7% with a dozen or so negatives for selling CDs he didn't actually stock, poor communications etc.

Estimated delivery was 28th January to 4th February. I was happy to wait that long for it.

I heard nothing and received nothing so, on 6th February I contacted the seller to say I hadn't received the item. Within hours he issued a full refund. No message, no contact, no explanation, no apology, just a full refund.

On 8th February I decided he deserved a negative for poor communication and for selling items he didn't actually have. This is only the 3rd negative I have given in ten years and over a thousand transactions.

I bought the CD from another seller for £10.

However the first CD has arrived today, 10th January, posted from Germany but with no date of posting. I presume it has been delayed in the post but I have no way of knowing when it was posted.

What should I do?

If the second CD turns up I will have two identical copies.

I am happy to return the German CD at that sellers cost if he wants it back.

I would also be willing to cancel or amend the negative.

Should I contact the German seller or just forget about it?

I don't understand why you left negative feedback.

They refunded in full but didn't communicate. I would of just left positive or neutral at worst as the seller refunded without question. There could be a language barrier that restricts communication.

You could contact the seller to let them know it has arrived. This would give them an opportunity to review their delivery dates from point of sale.
Offer to return and see what happens.

You got a refund yet still left a negative? harsh!! and opened a case and only two days outside the delivery window!! and now you have the item as well, any wonder sellers get fed up with ebay!
  • You did what you thought was deserved. It seems harsh but it's your choice.

I would offer to revise the negative now, to a positive. Revised feedback and no low stars will remove the defect (for that part). Although, I'm not sure you raised a case or not (the title suggests it but the OP isn't clear). If you did, a defect will still remain on his account.

Message the seller, offer to revise the feedback and then explain you have the CD and if he sends you a SAE you will return it.

Is this also partly eBay's fault with their postage estimates?

I agree though, leaving neg even after a no questions asked refund seems really harsh.

You should certainly change the neg at the very least.

Change the negative, can you cancel the 2nd CD if it has not been sent?

The curse of ebay estimates- I thank my lucky stars that my European buyers don't neg me once the optimistic ebay delivery estimates are past.

  • You gave a neg. for the seller selling an item they didn't have (which they actually had)/poor communication (from a German seller)?

You now have the CD and your money and you are asking if you should just forget about it?

I presume you meant to write "neutral" and not "negative".

I left a negative as that is what I felt the situation deserved.

I sent this message on 6th Feb.
Hi, I haven't yet received this CD. As you will see from my feedback, I normally receive items very quickly. It is now past your latest estimated delivery time of 4th February. Do you have another copy you can dispatch as I still want the CD? Please advise.
If the seller had replied to that message apologising, advising me of the date he had dispatched the CD or asking me to wait a bit longer etc, then I would have been patient for a few more days. I am pretty tolerant of eBay problems if the seller communicates with me and, as it later transpired, the CD eventually arrived.

But he didn't take 60 seconds of his time to respond to a customer. He just issued a refund. His feedback suggests that he does this rather than communicate with his customers. He hasn't added follow up comments to any of the other 12 or so similar negatives to mine.

He is running a business selling CDs with mostly positive feedback from satisfied customers but appears to need to learn how to handle the occasional problem.

Regarding delivery dates, an order placed on 12th January should not take until 10th February to arrive from Germany. I get items delivered from the Far East far more quickly than that.

Any postal delay may not necessarily be his fault but it is his responsibility to communicate with a buyer who hasn't received a paid for item.

I will email him telling him the CD has arrived and see if I get a response. As above I'm happy to return it at his cost and revise feedback but he does need to contact me before that can happen.

Thanks everyone else for all the other posts. I think the above reply covers everything.

Is European post really that slow?

I have family in Switzerland and letters etc arrive within a few days either way.

The CD was despatched in a white jiffy type bag with a pre printed postal label marked "PRIORITAIRE" Deutsche Post etc. No price is marked on the label.
  • I order from a supplier in Germany, and things with Deutsche post usually arrive in 3-5 days.
