Basic bank accounts

Is this what will happen for everyone else, with any bank?
I guess if you manage to get one you must be meeting some sort of condition so yes. Some banks have other requirements, Handelsbanken London for example who won't entertain you unless you have a posh voice.
If you have £5000 you can open an account at Santander's private bank Cater Allen, I suspect if you have them 5k as a minimum they would gladly open you an account although I'm sure 5k is petty sums to them.0 -
Ive just opened a Cash account with TSB and I don't think they credit checked me. With something like 15 defaults they would have probably said bog off instantly if they had

It's really "so no", not "so yes", as you have no means to guarantee that you will get further accounts, or indeed keep your existing accounts, on the grounds that once upon a time you were accepted for a current account of sorts. It's just not how applications for bank accounts work. Each application will be assessed on its own merits.I guess if you manage to get one you must be meeting some sort of condition so yes.
what counts as a posh voice? I know irish, dutch, spanish and swedish nationals who have HB accounts - are you saying all those folks have posh voices? Some banks have other requirements, Handelsbanken London for example who won't entertain you unless you have a posh voice.
Leaving posh voices to one side, what do Handelsbanken offer that other banks don't? I have yet to find anything compelling. All the folks I know who have accounts with HB have them because the companies they work for listed HB as a bank who accepts foreign nationals when they are resident in the UK. Big deal...every other bank does that, too. What am I missing? What's the rest of the MSE forum missing?
I do have the odd £5K and then some, so I am very interested in anyone offering me value. Why would I be interested in Cater Allen? Just like with Handelsbanken, I haven't seen anything of interest - where am I going wrong? If you have £5000 you can open an account at Santander's private bank Cater Allen, I suspect if you have them 5k as a minimum they would gladly open you an account although I'm sure 5k is petty sums to them.
There will be others on the MSE Forum who would be interested in offers from those niche providers, so any useful information you have will be much appreciated.

Agree! Not sure why Paul_1977 is mentioning HB and Cater Allen in a thread specifically asking about basic bank accounts. They really aren't the places to go if you need basic accounts!
But there are loads of other current account providers out there - and yes, each application is considered on merit, so any suggestion that once one's open others easily follow is not necessarily true.0 -
You'll probably find they DID actually credit check you.
A cash account will be opened the same as a full account; for basic accounts they'll only weed out potential fraudsters, undischarged bankrupts and those they can't ID.Ive just opened a Cash account with TSB and I don't think they credit checked me. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
The OP is looking for a basic or full current account that doesn't credit check on application but I don't believe there are any.
Probably for switching bonus purposes

Thanks for everyone's replies.

Spot on Heng Leng, You are correct! :T
I'm looking for basic accounts that I can use to switch and not be credit checked on, as the current accounts that offer incentives, such as £100 to switch for example will obviously be credit checked.
I have read on here that Barclays offer a Cash Card and Co-op offer a Cashminder that doesn't require a credit check but it does say:
"No credit check is needed (although an identity check with a credit reference agency may be carried out)" - So is that still a credit search?
The same applies to Metro Bank's basic account also, it is a I.D. check from what they told me.0 -

The key word in my post is "guess". I guess, never said it was so.what counts as a posh voice? I know irish, dutch, spanish and swedish nationals who have HB accounts - are you saying all those folks have posh voices?
Posh was the wrong word, They like well spoken people, or anyone who can stuff their accounts with lots of money. Sorry Handelsbanken once treated me like a piece of dirt so I don't like them very much and think the London lot or at least the ones I have spoken to are a bunch of snobs.Leaving posh voices to one side, what do Handelsbanken offer that other banks don't? I have yet to find anything compelling. Look, Handelsbanken have a bit of a "oh look at me I have lots of money and I am well placed in soceity" type feel about them in London, if you go into a restaurant and wave a Handelsbanken card around it gets noticed by these sort of people, i.e. snobs or wannabe snobs, it must be a city thing, look at my card it does go on. At the same time there are customers who like their values and policy and bank with them only for that. But for some they want to be seen with a Handelsbanken card. I know it sounds stupid but London is full of these sorts. There branches are independent and seem to set different requirements for accounts, so outside London they may not been the same.
There was a whole article about it, I will try and find it.I do have the odd £5K and then some, so I am very interested in anyone offering me value. Why would I be interested in Cater Allen? Just like with Handelsbanken, I haven't seen anything of interest - where am I going wrong?

Again its all to do for effect, if you want to impress someone and make them think you have lots of money, maybe a girlfriend etc then you can wave the Cater Allen card around when you pay for the meal, it must be a London thing. Although I have never done such things.0 -
