Is a 16GB iPhone 5S enough to handle iOS8?

Bit of an open question really, so if you're able to tell me how much remaining storage capacity there is on a 16GB iPhone 5S straight from the store with nothing extra put on there then that'd be much appreciated.

My wife's Galaxy S3 finally died after just over 2years this morning & now wont turn on after a few days of refusing to charge now & then.

She'd like an iPhone 5s (don't suggest 6 - too costly & also prefers the physical shape of the 5s) but isn't sure about how much storage capacity will be left after hearing the stories about iOS8 using up a huge chunk of your storage.

OH has one and it leaves little storage for much else.

I would get he minimum of 32Gb personally.

If she doesn't have much in the way of music and photos/vids it will cope fine.
  • Yeah that's what i mean about open question really.

My brother says his iPhone 5 battery is appalling ... but then he hammers it constantly whereas i don't :)

She doesn't store music on there & unlike myself she doesn't keep a stack of photos on hers. She uses a small number of apps, but with that last part i guess it all depends on the filesize of said apps.

Could do with the actual GB figure of the remaining capacity but i've been struggling to find it. The articles i've read i guess just assume you will store 100s of photos, videos & albums on there.
  • I take it you you know you will have to re buy the iphone versions of any android apps you currently have
  • iOS8 doesn't take up significantly more space than 7, the issue is the upgrade process - updating from 7 to 8 over the air requires several gig of space for the temp files which then get deleted. It was people who's phones were chocked full that had an issue as there wasn't room for these temp files to allow the update. Update the os via plugging into iTunes and there isn't an issue. My 16 gb iPhone 5 with iOS8 has 12+ gb of memory available to me.

Unless they are free on iOS I guess.

Get her one of these instead. Much cheaper very good phone. Has an sd slot so storage can easily be increased if needed.

Just a thought, do you think that replacing the battery in the S3 would negate the need for a new phone? You can pick up genuine Samsung ones for around £20

Ahhh this is where the confusion is then. The OTA thing. Thanks very much for clearing that up.

Unfortunately that isn't going to help.

Her battery died, so she bought a replacement. This was no good so she bought an official battery replacement.

This sorted the problem for a few months.

Then this weekend her phone just refused to charge, then it'd charge but only slowly, then it'd charge properly, then it wouldn't charge at all.

Then today there's zero power & it just simply will not charge.

Apparently googling returns many of these stories. She's had the phone for about 2.5 years. Her sister has had the Galaxy S4 for just shy of 12 months & is having the same issue regards charging.

Samsungs do seem to have battery issues; I've got an Ace as a spare, and it ain't great and sometimes won't charge. Sometimes taking the battery out for a short will and then putting it back can help.

My youngest had a Samsung, but I gave him an iPhone 4 and he's way happier with that.

I've never had a particular issue with my iPhone 5's battery, though a sat-nav app will eat it all.
