I was pulled up by ministry man for failing a track rod end with play in it. Was told unless it's so worn it's about to fall off it's not a fail.
    Mad what can pass.

Yep, minimum standards all round :)

Although, you could now probably have failed it for play at the steering wheel seeing as they've actually given a figure for that - admittedly based on a 15 inch steering wheel, and when did you last see one of those????

Aren't the old steering boxes measured in feet?

Oh, steering box rather than rack & pinion? In that case you get all the help you could hope for.....

A point on the rim of the steering wheel moves, without the road wheels moving, for more than:

a.75mm for non rack and pinion

    b. 13mm for rack and pinion steering

Yep, you landy guys get a full 3 inches while we have to make do with 1/2 inch :p

eta: Yep, pretty much, Justin :D

Yeah, got the same (only idler arm instead of relay box) on her 5 series. Doesn't have the (intentional???) shock-absorbing play of a landy but it's still annoying me trying to get it play free.

How, in anyone but DM's world, can the "Ultimate Driving Machine" have 1930s tractor technology in its steering system? :D
