I applied for the Halifax Clarity credit card and got an instant rejection. Appealed in writing and less than a week later it was overturned. Got a £1200 credit limit and can get rid of my Vanquis card
Well worth the ten minutes it took to write the appeal (and the 20 minutes on the phone to complete a new application). My first mainstream card

Well done, I had the same success with Santander. Im sure its just a computer which rejects you, talk to a person and your in much better luck.:)0 -
Make sure you always make minimum payment on time, every time. I'd suggest setting up a direct debit for at least the minimum amount.
It is always best to pay IN FULL and work with the "If I can't afford to pay in full, then I cant afford it this month" ethos...ORIGINAL MORTGAGE AMOUNT £106,454.00 (Started Sept 2007)
NOV 2021 O/S AMOUNT £1,694.41 OUR DEBT REDUCED BY £104,759.59 by std regular, over-payments & off-setting.
BofE +0.19% Tracker Repayment Offset Mortgage Discounted Sept 07-10 then increased to BofE +0.62% until 20270 -

I've set up a DD for the minimum. However, I always pay my Vanquis card in full every month and intend to do the same with this card (as it is a direct replacement for the Vanquis card).0 -

What address did you use to send the appeal letter? Thanks!0 -

I did it back 5-6 years ago.
I appealed and it was successful. Since then I have been using it. They even propose to increase my limit to a quite generous limit without me asking them and certainly I accept that.
People need to be aware of that there are various type of people working in the financial / banking industries. Some of them are lazy and less competent, very risk averse. Unfortunately you will never know who is going to work on your case.
The appeal will mean a different and often the more senior person will look into your case. So it is worthy considering it does not take a lot of time to write a letter and to present your case.0 -
Thanks for this advice, I was rejected for a Halifax Clarity card last week. Since then I've applied for a Halifax current account (with overdraft), got an Aqua reward card and written a letter like you suggested.
I'm hoping the letter will convince Halifax to change their mind but if not I'm planning on keeping a small balance in the Halifax current account and using the Aqua card with a direct debit to repay in full each month. Then, in maybe 6 months time re-applying for the Halifax Clarity card!
Anything else I can do assuming my letter does not convince them?0 -
So I got a letter back saying that on second consideration they would like to accept me. I got offered a credit limit of £1500 and an APR of around 20% which was better than the £1200 with around 40% I originally got offered!
I went back into the branch, showed them the letter and re-applied last week. My card just arrived this morning! In the mean time my current account application got stalled on the identity check, I guess for the same reason that my credit card application was originally declined. Not to worry, I just cancelled that application and phoned Aqua to cancel the crappy card I opened with them too!
So now I'm finally where I wanted to be - with a clarity card and none of the other crap0 -
Did any of you who were rejected had a go with the MSE eligilibility calculator before applying for the Halifax clarity?
