I don't believe this. Hijack log missing a host file so I cannot get a notepad log to post.

Roll back using system restore to before you installed malwarebytes, assuming system restore is acvtive.
Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.

Not even a roll back is going to correct this. Using their help to find the host file doesn't cure it.

    Enough for today. :)

I now cannot uninstall a corrupt malwarebytes so I can re-install and run.

In remove programs it is missing a file so cannot be removed - says re-install to correct. I cannot re-install as an existing program is still there.

How else can I manually remove the program?

Have you tried renaming the program folder?
  • Too much happening on start up(not just 2 a/v packages) Why do you need Java? Too many tools starting up at start up.

    Don't do this

because then you have to redo what you have done since....

The bit about hosts file is not actually caused by a missing / unavailable hosts file, it is because you did not run HJT as an administrator(you need to right click on HJT and select run as an administrator) possibly the same for Malwarebytes but I haven't seen that before

    No idea about Java.

How do I restrict what happens on start up?

The original Hijackthis was done in safe mode and it was fine. It's normal mode I cannot get a log file to save for copy and paste.

use CCleaner, under Tools>Startup, and disable pretty much everything other than a/v. You'll need to right-click the shortcut and Run as Administrator to do this.

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

Right I have removed comodo - just have the firewall. Reinstalled and updated AVG.
You don't need a third party firewall. The one built into Windows works perfectly well and won't potentially cause issues.

I cannot find how to run Hijackthis in Administrator mode.

Malawarbytes. won't uninstall because of a missing component, says to download a new version. I cannot download a new version because it already exists on the laptop.

    Right-click "Run as Administrator"?

Download and installation are 2 separate things. If already downloaded just reinstall it. If not already downloaded download it again?

EDIT: may be worth checking you ARE an admin...
