    You have some very good advice so far,and also advice from others who unfortunately arent reading everything.

    You cannot remove a plate from an ancient socket so you are unable to do the test as advised.

    The OP says that their "BT sockets are ancient" but how old is ancient?

    The NTE5 sockets with the lower customer removable plate have been fitted for at least 30 years. The first ones fitted up until 1991 had the BT "T" logo on them, prior to the "BT" logo or "openreach a BT Group business" on them now.

    This is a money saving site and the only way to be sure that they will not be charged £130, is to isolate any internal extension wiring and then test for dropouts. After this has been done the fault needs to be reported to their provider BT.

    I have had exactly the same problem for many months. Sky escalated it and eventually a broadband engineer attended.

    He found 2 faults on the line in the street which were undetectable using a usual line test. He also gave me a new master socket as mine was ancient just to cover any possible problem there.

    Total charge?..nowt

    Brilliant service from Sky,it has to be said(although it took many complaints of drop outs and advice from sky to change microfilters/change router channels etc)

    You are correct. Well done,but the matter was instigated by Sky. Maybe another ISP would have been reluctant to spend money on a broadband engineer.?

    My point is you were singing Sky's praises, when all they've done is send a fault ticket to BT Openreach. Or, in other words, very little.

    Openreach ar responsible for everything up to and including the master socket, so neither you or your ISP would have paid anything for the rectification of your fault(s).
