Was your meter at £0.00 ?
If so the debt you paid will most likely be the daily service charge, that accumulates everyday even if you have no money in the meter.0 -
As above, sounds like you could be paying off someone else's debt, especially if UW are not aware you're the new tenant. Although not sure if I'm following correctly, is this the first time you've topped up in your 10 months of living there? I would have expected you to know the supplier otherwise.
PS - some bore will be along soon to tell you you're not allowed to talk about UW here.0 -

No, that is not how it works. Phone them up today and register for an account. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

I have topped up plenty of times but I think this is the first time I've paid proper attention to the balance. I have been charged before as I had used the emergency credit and it takes extra off the money topped up (again, I'm not used to these things so just assumed that was how it worked) but this last time I knew I was on zero and had avoided using the emergency gas. So really noticed when I had put £20 on and it took some money off for debt. I will contact UW tomorrow and see what's going on . . thanks.0 -
I contacted UW today and changed the details. I was told that they take 83p per day as a service charge and that other suppliers could charge more! . . . 83 pence per day??????? Really????????0

Sounds about right, prepay meters are very expensive. Are you able to switch to credit meters? Both the rates and standing charges would be significantly less.0

Never heard of a credit meter to be honest. Will have to look into it. Though if it means me having to ask permission from my landlord, I doubt it'll be doable :-/ . . . . we shall see.0

83p a day standing charge is ridiculous, are you sure thats not the weekly rate ?. The electric prepays show the rate as a weekly price, not daily. i havent looked at the gas prepays rates, but UW could have a super low tariff to compensate so would suit a high user.Go onto Upower.co.uk and check and do a switch if its better, ticking prepays and all available suppliers you can switch to .BG are expensive at 26p a day with a tariff of around 4.4 p per kwhr for prepays. There are two types of debt on prepays..standing charge debts , which can build up if you are not a frequent topperupper, and the more sinister" debt owing" which is lurking on screen 26 on the prepay with screen 27 showing the weekly repayment. These screens need your card inserted to show it. Red button needs to beep , or hold it down then you can scroll through all the many screens, one of which ( 10 I think ) shows the tariff.
Credit meters are a much better bet as you can then pick a much cheaper tariff , on a one year fix. Prepays are on the standard/variable tariffs
Had a look at a gas prepay today and they do indeed show the daily standing charge, not weekly like the electric.0 -

A credit meter means you get a bill for what you use each month/quarter rather than 'topping up' the meter as and when. It also means you can spread your payments across the year so you spend the same amount per month in winter as you do in summer.0 -
£25 a month service charge. Ouch.0
