new upvc windows flush with outside brickwork

Hi I have recently had some new windows installed. The old windows have a 50mm profile but the new windows are alot thicker. Due to the windows being thicker, when they are installed the windows are flush with the outside brickwork. It looks ok but it doesnt seem right, can anybody shed any light on this? I am thinking that if the windows are not recessed into the bricked then water can run down the house and into the top of the window. Thanks.

Windows should always be set back from the front of the brickwork. The reason being the window perimeter between the frame and the brickwork can be sealed with sealant to stop water ingress. Its a big no no to fit a window flush with the outside and it looks pants. As it is you can get damp penetrating through .

Its poor workmanship I'm afraid and you need to get them back and they need to cut back the inside reveal with a gringer or if its soft plaster/gyproc it can be done with a hand saw..

I'm just guessing but were they Upvc windows all fitted within a day?..
  • Yes they fitted 5 windows all in one day. I have phoned the company and they said that it is ok the fit like that so any advice on how to get them back would be appreciated

Well I'm 99.99999 % sure its not ok . Even if the windows were fitted into blockwork which would then be rendered they should never be fitted in flush with the front of the blockword. I think they are trying to pull a fast one.

The problem with the Upvc industry in general is its so cut-throat the fitting prices are rubbish so the fitters need to fit so many windows in one day that the quality of workmanship suffers. Then they superglue hideous plastic trims to the inside wall reveals instead of making good the plasterwork and slap silicone all over the place.

Can you post any photo's ali?....
  • i have some pictures but i am not sure how to upload them

You may have to upload to a 3rd party site like Flickr....... Its very easy to do. Have a dabble with a site called Flickr.

I think you need to copy and paste the URL Ali, which would be in the address bar at the top but I think you may need to upload the pix to a 3rd party site like Flickr.

At the top of the box where you type your message click the box that looks like a mountain and see if that helps.
