Hi all, I think my decision is a Moto 3 unlocked on the 3 network. Now all I have to do is actually purchase it.
Tesco have it but it has no mains charger. Will I need to buy one at extra cost and will any charger with the right connector be as good as any other. We will also need to have an in car charger.
If Iris reads this, I have sent you a pm.
Thanks for all you suggestions, I've certainly learned a lot since the olden days when I bought our old phones.0 -

You would just need to buy a usb mains adaptor and a car charger. You may find that you already have a usb mains adaptor for something else e.g. Kindle.
Something like this would do the trick, which has both.

Thanks Anne Marie, I think the phone comes with the usb cable but not the mains or car obviously.
We do in fact have some similar cables, the I pad mini looks to have the same mini cable and plug. Would this be different being made specifically for the I pad. I'll have a look at the Tom Tom plug which is in the car and see what that looks like.
Thanks for the link, I've saved it.
I feel like I understand a bit more about smart phones now. I know a few folks think hubby perhaps could manage with a basic phone but while we're buying a phone to last as long as they last??? Then we want something with a good size screen, and a decent camera for picture quality. This phone could have a bit more memory added I think for more pics but we aren't games players so probably wouldn't use all the memory on here. I might just need help when I get it to find how to switch off the wi fi but then how to enable it again if we are in a wi fi free hotspot.
See I'm getting into the new terminology nicely.

No problem bjbyorkshire, you seem to be coming along nicely with all this new fangled technology stuff.
As Grumbler has said, your iPad charger is different, you will need something as on the link that I gave you. Please look further though, as you may get something cheaper and separately, I just had a quick glance. I did look on Tesco, but they all seemed to be quite expensive.
A lot of phones these days, don't come with chargers. It's to save on waste, which is no bad thing.
As for decent camera, sorry, I have no idea of the quality of the camera on the Moto phone.
Looks like your Tom Tom in car charger would be fine, so no need to buy another, unless you need two usb ports. Easily available from Amazon and elsewhere.0 -
One other thing, that might not be important to you, but thought I should point it out. The Moto E doesn't have a front camera, so you wouldn't be able to use video on Skype.
The Moto G, Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Lumia 535 all have front facing cameras as well as rear.0 -
After much deliberation I have finally made my purchase. I've gone for a higher priced Moto G 4G. I read all the reviews and looked at the ones you good folks suggested and this was my decision in the end.
I will need a charger and I'm going with Sainsburys sim 8p calls and 4p texts. I'll see how this goes and can then try other companies if I'm not happy with the reception on this one.
Thanks again for all your help and suggestions.0 -
good choice bjb, the moto g is a good phone, i thought it was a bit big at first but am getting used to it.
it took me a while to get used to a lumia 520 after having a wildfire before.
the 4g when it kicks in is amazing..... just like home broadband speed.0 -
Just an update, I am getting used to the Moto G3 now. I bought a £10 Three sim from a small newsagent. Lovely next door neighbour got me going with a few basic pointers and so far it is going ok.
I did have a bit of a problem finding out how to check my credit left. Calling 444 tells you how much of the £10 is left but by registering for My Account I can now check the data left from the free .£150Mb which Three gives with every top up. I'm not sure if this free monthly data is only given if you top up your credit online or if it also takes effect if you buy from the newsagent as well? Anyone know about this?
I have taken a few photos which on the screen look fine. I have yet to find out how to get these transferred to my laptop. Lots to learn but so far so good.
Now to teach hubby what I have learned so far.
Oh yes, the white lead supplied with the phone connects into the bottom of the I pad plug and charges perfectly.
I have found out how to turn off the data and am connected to my cousins talk talk router. He gays free calls and Internet use so no charge to him or me. When we move on to a hotel next weekend I will connect to The hotels free wi fi or Weatherspoons while we are there and so hopefully my three 321 plan should be inexpensive.
If I keep to £10 top ups then I can't rack up big Internet costs.
Hope this helps any newbies to get onto smart phones without a big monthly cost.
If anyone spots anything I may have overlooked please feel free to tell me.
Thanks0
