i've found parkers website quite good for seeing what incurance groups cars are.
The cheapest for me at the moment is LV= car insurance (looking at a group 1 car)

Remember confused don't show all insurers such as direct line won't show up.

A group 2/3 is always around the £1000 mark, depends on postcode, where the car is kept, security features etc, give or take a couple of hundred for them.

Plain to see why so many young drivers choose to drive without insurance, it costs a fortune!

Car insurance for young drivers will nearly always come down quite a bit if you add a more experienced driver as a named driver. I.e. the main driver can be the 17 year old but as long as there is an additional named experienced driver (with a relatively clean record) the quote should come in a fair bit lower.

I guess they do some kind of calculation that will estimate that the main driver will only be driving 80% of the time.

(Also gives the additional benefit that you can borrow your sons car!)

    Try it on the websites!

The reason the insurance is more expensive is due to the fact younger drivers are more likely to be involved in an accident(whether or not they're at fault)

    Is it?

The cost of insurance reflects the risk associated with younger drivers. Some people seem to think they have a right to drive on the roads and they should do so unlawfully if they don't like the associated costs.
  • There was something on here a while back about young drivers insurance. If the car is not used between 11pm and 6am you could get a cheaper deal as most young drivers have accidents between these times, probably in a local super market car parks.

Edit: apparently you have to be 18 but here's a link http://www.morethandrivetime.com/
Nothing to see here, move along.

It's very expensive but I (20) got round it my insuring my boyfriend as the main driver, had to put the car in his name for this but don't know if you always have to, and myself as a named driver, comes to £450, which is much more manageable.
If you are the main driver of the car this could actually void your insurance.
Plus unless you are with certain insurers you won't get any ncb for this so when you go to insure in your own name you won't benefit as much.

and the more uninsured drivers there are on the road the more people that drive legally and pay insurance have to pay more:mad:

Could not agree more. If you cannot afford the costs associated with motoring then stay off the roads. It is not a god given right to drive.

PS: A friend has just found out the hard way what driving uninsured can cost. His house.
Wife hit another car. Driver of the other car had to retire early due to injuries. He was a high earner. Claim came to over £1m.
MIB will settle the claim then put a charge on my friends house to settle the debt.
