17 year old new driver...how much ?

I know this is a bit of a shot in the dark, but I am trying to get info on how much it will cost in insurance for a newly qualified 17 year old male driver depending on which type of car/insurance group they go for.

i understand there are other factors which can make a difference, but any ball park figures would be useful.

Not sure how much this helps but I have a male friend who's 19. He drives his own 1.3 litre (i think?) and his insurance is £1300 and i think that might have some no claims on. It's very expensive but I (20) got round it my insuring my boyfriend as the main driver, had to put the car in his name for this but don't know if you always have to, and myself as a named driver, comes to £450, which is much more manageable.

    Hi,

Any car for a 17 year old driver is expensive (speaking from experience, from the last 3 months)
    http://www.moneysupermarket.com

Use this search, its much faster than confused.com, and still searches a decent amount!

I'll take you through my insurance...

    I have a Rover 200 (1.4) R reg '97 as my first car. (INSURANCE GROUP 4)

Quinn Direct offered me, on a full driving licence;
    Fully Comp: £2300*
    TPFT: £1600*

(* pass plus will deduct 10% off that price)

Now, these are "cheapest" quotes i found for my car.

As i haven't passed my test yet, i rang Quinn Direct up, to insure my car on a provisional driving licence.

They offered me £910 TPFT!!!! and the best part was, they said it won't increase once i have passed my test! (didn't do a quote for fully comp)

Right then, as you can see insurance is a very stressful and expensive time.

Even for a 1.1corsa _(INSURANCE GROUP 1/2 i think)_the TPFT insurance for this was £1200, fully comp just under £2grand!!!

I hope this is clear enough for you, if you have any other questions to ask about my insurance/ others... Please Don't Hesitate To Ask

To tell you now, you will be paying easily over £1000 with any company!
    :o
  • i just put the figures into moneysupermarket - oh my god...

even a 995cc corsa, worth about 1500 quid it is coming up as £1800 TPFT.

oh well, he will be taking the bus then....
  • My brother has just passed his test and is 17. He has a C reg Mini 998c and his is about £1200 with endsleigh. Not sure if its fully comp or 3rd party. But My other brother is 19 and he pays £1400 on a J reg 1.2 VW Golf and he's been driving for a year or two (Liverpool Victoria)
When I was 17 (4 years ago) I paid £900ish for a Old K reg Mini with Norwich union. I did the pass plus course which knocked £1000 off my policy although my brothers got told it makes v.little difference these days.

My best advice would be to use the compare sites. (I usually use confused)
Ring the top few and try to play them off against each other. But also go through the phone book and ring around for quotes. Sometimes you'll find a cheaper quote this way, but it's V. Time consuming.
Also get a low powered car.

    Hope all thats of help.
I'm not lost. I'm just going the long way round.....

Pass Plus, i can tell you doesn't do much these days, just gives your instructor more money, and gives you more confidence!
  • i think the equation used by insurance companies for male drivers under 21 is as follows :

    think of a number,

    double it,

    add £200

    double it,

    add £200 again.

if it still doesn't compare with bill gates income tax bill then double it again!

it is absolutely scandelous how much young drivers get charged for insurance. but so long as there are people wiling to pay it, they will keep charging it.

Premiums are high because young/inexperienced drivers are a very high risk - its as simple as that. Motor insurance is a highly competitive market - if any insurer can actually cover the risk for lower than their competitors then they will offer lower premiums.

    A few stats for you:

1 in 5 drivers has an accident in their first year of driving.

1 in 3 young male drivers write off a car in their first year of driving.

Under-25s account for 1 in 8 of all licence holders, but account for 1 in 3 of drivers killed in crashes and half of drivers killed at night.

A quarter of the convictions for causing death by dangerous driving are for drivers under 20, even though this age group represents 3% of all drivers.
