    Its a 2004 Peugeot 206. We did pay for it by credit card so maybe I will have more luck claiming Section 75 from the credit card company.

    As they say, if its too good to be true, it usually is!

    How much is a 10 year old straight 206 worth last year, £1000?

    What was the massively discounted price you bought it for?
    "Dream World" by The B Sharps....describes a lot of the posts in the Loans and Mortgage sections !!!

    I'm just trying to figure out what rights I have that's all, I don't know if I have any at all but I have to ask somewhere before I approach the garage.

    SOGA says that any goods sold must be of merchantable quality. For used goods, that's tempered by reasonable expectations for the age/price/description at sale. The vendor has the right to repair before refunding. Any faults must be pre-existing at the time of sale.
    I have looked for 2nd hand gearboxes, I forgot to mention it was automatic, they range from £350 - £1500! The top end is more than the car is worth!

    Changed - or even checked - the fluid condition and level since you bought it? Most autobox issues are caused by poor maintenance leading to filthy or low fluid. A two-second google finds that the AL4 box in the 206 auto doesn't have a specified change interval, but has a level check interval of every 60k km/36k mile/5 years. In reality, and especially if you want it to last, it makes a lot of sense to check it far more frequently, and change it at at least that kind of interval. That box should notify you, by flashing the warning lights, when the fluid is detected as being due for a change, based on cold use/gear changes/other usage patterns. It needs very specific fluid, and needs the ECU resetting when the fluid's changed.

    I think that's about right. We got it for £400 and the only thing we could see wrong with it was a line down the back of the boot lid where they had reversed into a pole. We thought we had found a decent bargain.

    That's a very sensible idea. Or we could find one of these garages that give decent part-ex deals.

    Ahh okay. Its actually at the garage now as we speak. I am female and I will attempt basic things, wheel changes, bulb changes and topping up oil but I wasn't even aware that the gearbox had fluid.
    I was just asking a few questions to prepare myself for the worst. I told the mechanic that it was slow at changing gear and it over-revved a lot and he said that because of its age, it could be the gearbox on the way out, however he did say he would change oil and some other technical sounding stuff so fingers crossed its just that! There are no warning lights at the moment, it just feels wrong, can it has done about 65k so you could be spot on there.

    No problem then, I wouldn't waste your time going back to the dealer. Get it scraped and buy another banger.
