Government warranty scheme?

Hi all, my partner bought a used car from an independent dealer roughly June 2014.
It was a Cat D car and we got it at a massively discounted price. All we had to do was get a new boot lid and away we went.
Because of its status, the garage didn't give us any warranty however they did give us a leaflet about some sort of Government run scheme, which would cover us if anything major went wrong in the first 12 months.
I cant find this leaflet now, or remember what it was called and wouldn't you know it, we have been told that the gearbox is on the way out.
Can we get help with this and does anyone know where I can find out more about this government warranty type thing?

I did not know that the UK Government where backing the sale of second hand cars now !
Go back to the dealer, good luck with it."Dream World" by The B Sharps....describes a lot of the posts in the Loans and Mortgage sections !!!0 -
So even if they didn't sell it with a warranty, they still have to help?I work, I pay debts, I work some more and then pay more debts...give me a break! :money:0

Not sure after 6 months+, depends what the car was, how old etc. after this amount of time it is probably down to you to prove that the problem was inherent when you bought the car. For example, if you paid £500 for a 12 year old car then you would have very little comeback, but if it was a nearly new car then you *might* have a chance.0

Have to say I missed that bit, I say Cat D but had scanned past that - yes, it sounds like they have bought an unrepaired cat D - in which case I have to agree with you.0 -

I really hope you do find it, because I need a laugh.
The only thing that even vaguely exists is the Sale of Goods Act, and that doesn't do that.and wouldn't you know it, we have been told that the gearbox is on the way out.
In a car that's been hit hard up the chuff? Not necessarily a great surprise, even assuming it isn't just a straight wear-and-tear issue. What car, what age?0 -
Damn, sounds like they saw us coming from a mile off!
Its a 2004 Peugeot 206. We did pay for it by credit card so maybe I will have more luck claiming Section 75 from the credit card company.
As they say, if its too good to be true, it usually is!
I will keep looking for this leaflet we were given, I will let you see it if I find it.
Thanks for all of your help.I work, I pay debts, I work some more and then pay more debts...give me a break! :money:0 -

A replacement 'box should be cheap enough, then.We did pay for it by credit card so maybe I will have more luck claiming Section 75 from the credit card company.
On what grounds? Because the 10yo car you bought a year ago, cheap as an unrepaired collision-damaged write-off, is starting to show signs of age? Yeh, good luck with that...0 -
I think you'll give your credit card company a laugh if you go throught them.
How does this sound for your call to them.
Hello, can you help me?
Yes, what can we do for you?
Well I bought a ten year old piece of scrap last year that doesn't work so I want may money back.

I'm just trying to figure out what rights I have that's all, I don't know if I have any at all but I have to ask somewhere before I approach the garage.
I have looked for 2nd hand gearboxes, I forgot to mention it was automatic, they range from £350 - £1500! The top end is more than the car is worth!I work, I pay debts, I work some more and then pay more debts...give me a break! :money:0
