Full signal bars but no (intermittent) data on 3

Since joining 3 I've had an intermittent problem with the data connection on my phone.
There's always signal bars displayed, but around half the time there's no data connection - I cannot get onto any web pages, send/receive email etc.
After exhausting 3's technical department's expertise there is seemingly nothing they can advise. My sim free Z3 Compact worked fine before on EE, and the APN settings are set correctly.
They can't find any fault with the local mast, so they claim it might be my phone as it wasn't purchased from them. It doesn't carry any network branding so no network's software could be causing the issue.
Restarts/turning data on and off/redoing APN settings haven't helped. Is there anything else I can try for this? I have noticed upon doing speed checks when it is working that download speeds are usually anything between 0.1 and 0.8Mbps. Could this be a factor?
I should add that this isn't just isolated at home - this occurs in different areas I've been to, however it works absolutely fine when there's a 4G signal available.
Thanks in advance.

Backup data and factory reset try sim in another phone try a different sim in your phone .0

Thanks, have tried both.
Different sim in my phone is fine (don't have another 3 sim with credit to try though).
Sim in different phone - problem is less intermittent but still present. 3 have also replaced my sim card but this hasn't resolved it.
I was thinking it might be something on my account they've put on at their end but they say this isn't the case..0 -
Have you tried it in another location?0

Yes, it is better out of town. Locally it normally works well when within the limited 4G coverage area, but it usually happens when connected to 3G. I might try turning 4G off for a while, maybe it's trying to use LTE when it's not around or something? Certainly haven't come across the problem before.
Edit: Now sorted, for some reason having national roaming turned on the phone was the culprit. Now it's off, it's fine.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions.0 -

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.
So it looks like you are in an area where you have been roaming with the Orange network. Three does not have Orange roaming where I live anymore, but I remember having used it near Dover and data was either slow or unavailable. Voice call were fine though.0 -

I thought they turned that off round here years ago. Maybe not... although I thought they only roamed on Orange's 2G network rather than 3G?0 -
2g roaming only.0
