Where to put door into study?

Hi
I would be very grateful for people's opinions to where we should put our door leading into a study room, as the decsion is split with me and missus.
Summary:
- We are converting an integral garage to become a study room.
- The study will be used for an hour or 2 a day max (kids homework etc) and not used as homeworker office.
- The options we have are either to put a door from our living room to the study or a door from the utility room to the study.
- With living room, there will be TV noise when opening door, and also impact on the living room space/layout.
- To get to the utility you have to go via the kitchen, therefore this option would mean going thru 2 doors to get to study.

What would you do?
Thanks

Define the use of the study ?
Serious work ( sorry have to smile, now retired , so no work for me) or a casual place for the kids to do home work and mum/dad to 'play' on the pc
Only serious work needs peace and quiet ( and two doors to keep unwanted noise out)0 -
wallbash - I think it is a bit of both. Kids in a couple of years will be doing school exams and then it needs some serious quiet work but am sure will also be used to watch films etc as well.
I guess what I am struggling to nail down is, does it seem more natural to have a door from living room than having to go thru 2 doors?0 -
Which way does the wife want it.....thats always the best option to go with....
Noise could be an "issue " both ways if your washing machine and electricals are in the utility room so I wouldnt just look at it from a noise point of view.
Personally I would access it via the utility room as I guess you already have a door to the kitchen from the lounge and I'm not a fan of lots of doorways in a room....how much room do you lose in each area by creating a doorway, you need to look at that too....you dont seem to mention how much of the utility room space you would lose but are concerned about losing living room space....if the family use the living room more than the kitchen to gather in then it seems strange to reduce space just to access the new study......frugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!

Correct, you can't go wrong with doing as you are told.0 -
Is this a house you will live in forever, or does resale potential affect the decision? Personally, if I viewed a house with a converted garage accessed though a utility room that would put me off, as I would want to use it as another reception room. A door from the living room would make the room suitable for a wider variety of uses, and would be my preference unless the extra doorway would be positioned so as to really diminish the usability of the living room.0

One thing you might want to bear in mind - the study would be a logical place to have a computer to help with homework etc. Some parents would prefer to be able to informally monitor what their kids are doing online - that would appear to be easier if you are in the lounge and can easily pop your head round the door than if you've got to get through the utility room (potentially alerting them to your approach) to even open the door.Adventure before Dementia!0

Thanks.
Yes double door from living room to kitchen (I forgot to draw). Yes your right there will be noise from both rooms (i.e. TV or washing machine etc).
Wife would prefer via the living room.
Personally I want via utiliy room. Actually the utility room will be built at the same time, therefore I am also thinking that during this upheavel when the wall between the utiliy and study is built it will be a lot easier and importnantly cheaper to stick the door in there.0 -

I think what you say is quite correct...and thats what the OP needs to decide.....Is the room a study or a room to watch films in?...at the moment its being seen as potential for both.
OP ...to study or relax...and is it large enough to be considered as an additional reception room,or extention to the lounge area.....frugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!

Thanks for replies.
The plan is to live here for the forseeable future and maybe in around 10 years we will sell.
Not sure if this makes a difference, but we do currently have a another reception room (used as a dining room).
I am not totally against the idea of living room, and can see that it becomes more usuable next to the living room. Just not sure whether the extra expense would be worth it.0 -
For what it's worth. Utility rooms are normally not very large, so cutting another door opening is going to seriously reduce the usable utility space.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0
