Should I have paid for broken glasses?

  • My bag fell off of a roof rack onto someone's head once. I paid for their coffee from the trolley. They weren't injured, just embarrassed but it was just a nice thing to do to express my regret that it had fallen on them. The bag fit onto the roof rack and wasn't overly heavy and neither of us did anything wrong, it was just unfortunate that the train jerked and the bag fell onto them, but it's nice to be nice.

Exactly! It's not love that makes the world go round, it's courtesy!

It's a bit ambiguous as to whether this was a deliberate act :D

I agree. The way it was worded, it does sound like the OP could possibly have been more careful than s/he really was.
If they broke from the fall, the lady can only blame herself for not being more careful with them, but if someone treads on them knowingly as a means of revenge for not leaving the other person's seat clear; "suits you for putting them on the floor", or to teach the other person a lesson, that is a nasty thing to do. I would have picked them up for her - like a gentleman!

Don't make judgments about the lady spreading her stuff. You don't know why she felt the need to do it. Maybe she had indeed lost something important. Maybe she had an unseen disability and/or was looking for her medication, inhaler, whatever. Don't judge.
