Should I have paid for broken glasses?

The girl should not have been spreading out her belongings on another's seat knowing the plane would fill up imminently. In addition, she knocked her own glasses off the seat. It is no way your resposibilty to pay for the glasses.0

Of course not, and.... you don't have to be careful where you put your feet any more than for your own safety.... as has been suggested!!0
-
No you should definitely not pay. For some unknown reason this girl chose to unpack her hand luggage, spread it all over your seat then was careless enough to knock her glasses to the floor, creating a target area.0

She should have been more careful with her belongings,do not offer to pay as this was not your fault. In her panic to clear "your" seat the glasses had ended up on the floor, you clearly didn't know they were there, this was an accident caused by her. Those of us that have been fortunate enough to travel on a plane are only to aware of the cramped seating and restricted leg room. The fact that the're Ray-Ban sunglasses is irrelevant, could have been a cheap pair, who cares. It was her fault for allowing them to hit the floor. If it was me i would apologise and explain all the above hopeing that she was smart enough to agree.Otherwise it could be a long flight so buying her a few drinks would help the situation.0

I would feel so guilty that I would offer to pay half even though it was an accident!
She shouldn't have had her things sprawled all over the place though....0 -

You go to a restaurant with a friend and after the meal relax on a sofa, then ten minutes later someone comes over looking for their specs. After both getting up you realize the've been squashed, are you still going to pay half?Tallgirld i think you should toughen up a bit and stop feeling so guilty.Make your mind up as you sound a bit confused,it's ok wanting to do the right thing but only when it's your fault and this isn't.Hope this helps.0 -
Not your fault.0

Did she suggest you should pay for them? If not, she doesn't really deserve all the bad-mouthing she's been getting in earlier posts, just a disorganised person. And you shouldn't feel guilty about things that you couldn't have helped.
If she did suggest you should pay though...0 -

Should I have offered to pay for a replacement pair or should she have been more careful?
Surely, this question is being posted long after the event, so quite irrelevant?
Should have asked her at the time. Did you take her contact details and arrange to let her know your answer after you had posted on here?

In any event where something is broken or likely to be broken or damaged, I'd consider who behaved responsibly. Her glasses were on the floor where people walk. She dropped them there, and though her dropping them was a mistake, you weren't doing anything unreasonable or irresponsible. You shouldn't pay for them.
I take my laptop on a train. I accept that if someone sat at the same table as me and the movement of the train results in their drink which is also on the table, spilling onto my laptop, or if they accidentally knock their drink onto it, it's my cross to bear. I chose to put my laptop in a place where there is a chance something like that could happen and nobody behaved irresponsibly, they are as entitled to put their drinks on the table as I am to put my laptop there. Not their fault, all mine. It's a risk I chose to take. If someone however decided to slam their uncovered drink on the table in a fit of rage and it spilled onto my laptop then I would look for some form of recompense as they were behaving recklessly.
My bag fell off of a roof rack onto someone's head once. I paid for their coffee from the trolley. They weren't injured, just embarrassed but it was just a nice thing to do to express my regret that it had fallen on them. The bag fit onto the roof rack and wasn't overly heavy and neither of us did anything wrong, it was just unfortunate that the train jerked and the bag fell onto them, but it's nice to be nice.0
