BBC iPlayer download speed

I am now in the 21st century - I am connected to fibre
However - my first trial using BBC iPlayer makes me wonder why all of the hype ?
Despite having a 38Mbps connection speed - my download speed from iPlayer is less than 1MB/sec - I expected considerably faster........
Anyone found similar ?

You state two entirely different speeds in your OP

MB and MBPS are two different things.

1MB/s is 8 Megabit per second

38 Mbps download speed will result in 4.8 Megabyte per second at full whack speeds

I am downloading at less than 1/4 of the available speed !!

I've found I player downloads somewhat odd- if I leave the downloading show at the top of the list, I get a speed around 2/3 or 2/4 slower than if I scroll down and hide the downloading show-madness!

I know the speeds are differing because if I go to the top again a much faster speed shows up, before dropping down.

Run a speed test online, it may well be i Player and not your fibre connection.

Okay if your speed test is coming back as it should (maybe try 2 different ones to be doubly sure) then it'll be i Player.

Try scrolling down the page in the player once the download starts, wait 2-5 mins then scroll up again to see what speed is showing.

I did hear a big update/revamp is due this year for i Player to improve/ bring the general function up to date.

EDITED: by scroll down I mean far enough so the downloading show is not visible.
  • Yes Iplayer is so slow sometimes, even when streaming it can be a pain and get the buffer face frequently so I just download from my sky box and watch on there now.

    Ditto, it doesn't make sense!
