Why oh why did you not just pay him back the money when you had it, after what happened a year ago !?!?!??!

So was it you or your girlfriend who borrowed the money....or did your girlfriend borrow the money off her Dad to buy you a car?

Maybe he is also annoyed that you went on holiday while still owing them money!

They offered and shoved 6000 in front of her at 100 a month back. We now know that the reason they did this is so that that they have a control over her. If she diesnt do as shes told they make threats of solicitors and coming to take the car etc.

I just wanted to know where she stood legally. We are fine paying it off monthly as agreed so to us theres no problem.
  • If she is the legal owner, not just the registered keeper, and she is making regular payments then they have no legal standing to get solicitors involved.

If you want "their control" to disappear, then pay them the balance.

Hang on, are you saying they forced her to borrow the money? Do you really believe that?

I tend to agree with this.

Last year, I lent my daughter money to buy her car and she pays me back at £100 per month. She didn't ask me to lend it to her, I offered. She is not paying me interest and I'm losing interest on what I lent her, although this is not a great amount.

If someone left her £10k, I would hope she would pay me back. But if she didn't, I wouldn't go to a solicitor. But her birthday and Xmas presents might be a lot smaller!!!

I did this years ago when my mum and dad lent me some money for a car. Unfortunately they wanted the money back to pay for my brothers masters degree (or help him out). They said he was male and his education was more important than my car (they are truly generous lovely folk, that's just how they saw it at the time).

I cashed in my credit card and paid them their money back. A couple of years later I split up with my husband. He took the car. Lol :D

I wouldn't have done what the parents are doing.

If I gave £6000 to DS on the understanding that the repayments were £100 per month, why would I move the goalposts?

I'd be pleased that he had been sensible enough to use the inheritance to pay off interest attracting debts rather than blowing it.

From previous posts from the OP, there appears to have been some sort of family breakdown.

Family members lending money leading to a breakdown in relationships?
    Who'd have seen that coming?
