It also has no be necessary.

    From the Highway Code.

If the area is bordered by a broken white line, you should not enter the area unless it is necessary and you can see that it is safe to do so.

Really? I'm struggling to think of a single instance where entering a chevron area is safer than not (excluding things like broken down vehicles blocking the clear carriageway of course).

It may be quicker at times by, for instance, allowing overtakes that wouldn't otherwise be possible without cutting someone up, but not safer than just chilling and waiting for a better opportunity.

    Emergency vehicles making progress.

Turning right off a nsl road, would you prefer all the traffic doing 56mph slows to 3mph whilst the 40 foot lorry squeezes into the tiny lane provided, or it drives through the broken lined area whilst slowing and out of the flow of traffic doing 56mph?
I can think of 100's of turnings where the lane for turning right is barely big enough for a lorry to fit into.

Many idiots in cars follow your suggestion, so we all have to slow to a crawl whilst they slow down in the road before getting out the way.
It's broken lines, use them properly, they're broken for a reason - and that reason's not to save money on paint.

    Fair do's :)
Main thing is you can enter. Often it's safe to do so when you can drive through and exit them IMO.

I don't disagree, but on an island like that they may as well be solid white lines.

As I said it may be quicker and more convenient but your suggestion isn't safer even in the example you just gave for when it would be safer.

Many idiots in cars confuse convenience with safety.....

I don't disagree on this video road.
Was more in answer to reply by Joe of don't enter them as it's not safe. Maybe I can offer him one of the three highway code books I have - or push him out the way with the lorry when he slows to a crawl in everyones way for no good reason :)

So slow to a crawl on a 60mph road instead is safer?
So why are the lines broken and not solid? Save money on paint, or what?

Don't be so hard on yourself, you'll come across a highway code one day and learn to drive better :)

But that's not at all what I said:

It's undoubtedly safer to stay out of chevron areas if you can't see why they're there or don't know what they're indicating. But that's absolutely not the same as saying it's never safe to enter them!

In this case enough people have been "confused" by the markings that they've made the local paper. All those confused drivers could be avoided by them following my suggested rule of thumb because they're in doubt:

"Chevrons, don't know why, go round them"

That way you don't have lots of distracted people trying to figure out what the markings mean as they drive into the boot of the car ahead!
