BBC iPlayer Downloads - green screen when playing?

Hi,

I have used BBC iPlayer download feature for some time. All had been working fine. But just lately when I play some downloaded items I get a blank green screen and/or other screen interruptions and hanging. The item will normally start to play OK but then just jump and go green and hang. Sometimes volume continues in the background, sometimes it does not.

This has happened on various items from just short 30 min downloads to 1 hour programmes or films.

Please can anyone tell me how to cure this? I have loads of downloaded items I'm unable to play.

AFAIK I haven't changed anything in my system settings. There was a BBC iPlayer update but that was ages ago and everything was still working fine after I did the update, until now...

Very grateful for any help.

I have a Windows 7 Home Premium laptop if that makes any difference.

  • Sounds like missing codec, try K-lite codec pack or CCCP

Try playing through VLC and see what happens.
  • Sorry if this gets duplicated - I had just typed a reply and it "vanished"..

Thx for the replies. Sorry, I don't understand the one about "codec" unless anyone can explain further?

Graeme, thank you but how can I use VLC to play these? I had thought they could only be accessed and played from within the iPlayer software window. Pls can you tell me how to do this and I'll give it a go.

    Many thanks.

Have you tried using a different browser?

Does the iPlayer think you are abroad, and not a Licence fee payer? Does it ask you?

    When did it last work?

Can you restore your computers settings to an earlier date?

If you uninstalled the iPlayer and then reinstalled it, i guess you would lose the programmes that you have downloaded and would have to download them again?
  • Hi

thanks, to answer your questions: it last worked in December 2014, it stopped working properly in January. I have not made any changes to my laptop AFAIK.

I don't think I am using a browser - I just open the iPlayer software, click on the downloaded programme and it opens it and plays it - I don't have (or need to have) any browser open AFAIK.

I'm in the UK. It does not ask any questions about my location or a licence. It goes to play the programme "normally" but only gets to around 5/10 minutes in before the screen goes black or just starts to "hang" and not play properly.

My internet access is via Three portable hotspot but this has always been the case - no change. Also I don't need to have internet access whilst playing back the downloads.

It's a complete mystery as to why it suddenly won't work.
  • Sorry, yes I meant to say I had thought about the option to download the iPlayer software and reload it but, as you say, I think this would mean I would lose all the downloaded programmes - and there are a lot of them so I'd rather not do that if there is another option to get it working again.

Have you tried googling your problem with the green screen?
  • Hi,

Yes I have tried googling it - the entries I've come across are all going back a few years and those that I've read haven't helped. The suggestions have been to reload the iPlayer software which I don't want to do unless I can avoid it as I don't want to lose the downloads I have.

Have you got the latest Adobe Air?
  • Thanks Laz123. I've searched in My Programs and the only thing that comes up is "Adobe Reader 9". Do I need to download Adobe Air? What is this for please? the iPlayer software has always worked fine up until now and I haven't changed any settings on my laptop, AFAIK....that is what is so confusing.
