Can anyone suggest any TV only deal for my 80+ mum please? she currently has Sky - we negotiated a discount for the last 12 months from around £30 to £20 a month - it just seems VERY expensive for what she is getting???. She only gets the basic TV channels (no sport/movies), but she likes UK Gold etc, and she likes to record programs to watch later. It doesn't include her phone nor any broadband. We suggested Freeview but that doesn't include some of her favourite channels. I've used some of the price comparison sites but most want to include broadband/phone etc, they all come in at around £20+ because ALL seem to add around £17 a month line rental. She certainly doesn't want broadband, and she currently gets a substantial discount from BT as a very low-user (making her last bill about £30 a quarter) for her phone, so she's loathe to lose that.

The problem is likely to be the cheapest BT TV option including UK Gold (£5/month) needs broadband too (otherwise it's just Freeview via a BT box).
She can have broadband on her line but that £5 will, of course, then increase by whatever you can negotiate broadband from BT for her. Nevertheless, that'll probably still be cheaper than the standard Sky package (albeit for far fewer channels).Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
The basic Sky package is only £21.50 so are you sure a discount has been applied ? The next one up, Variety is £28 and includes the children's , music and Discovery channels.
Cancelling , with appropriate 30/31 days' notice usually gets a better deal.0 -
The basic Sky package is only £21.50
So why are they taking £24.75 a month from me then?
What have they sneaked in that I don't know about?over 73 but not over the hill.0 -

I think a call to BT to see what they can offer, and then if they cant help then another call to Sky to get this sorted is in order ! Thanks everyone :-)0

Is Freesat like freeview ? Just keep the same Sky equipment ?
No, Freesat is a satellite service, Freeview comes only via an aerial. Similar channel line up. You can't get Freesat using a Sky box, what you will get without a subscription is the confusingly named 'Freesat from Sky'. Once again, a similar channel line up though. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Make sure you haggle as best as possible - especially with Sky0
