Neighbour running a business from home

Hi all,

I've got a question about a neighbour of ours. He seems to be running a car repair business from his house. Normally, this would not be a problem, but we live in a cul-de-sac and there are (at the moment) 5 cars outside his house.

The house we think is rented (possibly by the local housing association) and they are creating a bit of a nuisance.

My question is, what, if anything, can we do about it?

Many thanks

Andy

Is he actually carrying out the repairs on the road? If so that's illegal if he's doing it in the course of a business, or if it gives other people in the vicinity reasonable grounds for annoyance.

If he's just storing them on the road and doing the repairs in his garage this doesn't seem to apply though.

Aretnap, yes, he's doing the repairs on the road.

I'll look at the link you've provided and take it from there. Thanks for the advice.

If he's "doing up" cars to sell (?), then it may be worth finding out how many he can sell in a 12 month period ( there is a limit).
Also could be some benefit fraud going on here......

I think its a strange area this one as i thought one day for instance i could build a nice sized garage at my house and run a small garage from home but it says in the deeds to the house that the property can not be used to run a business from so i dont know if that would also be the case if his case? And i it was that you cant run a business from the adress i dont know what sort of trouble you can get into?

Don't ask, complain to the local authority. No one is allowed to create a nuisance by their anti-social behaviour, operating from premises owned, rented or gifted.
On another point mentioned, if you buy a car with the express intention of making a profit from it, undeclared earnings would be of interest to HMR&C. There isn't a magic minimum or maximum number.

Theres no "limit". If hes buying to repair and resell then he should inform HMRC the moment he does that. If hes saying that its just been coincidence that hes done that with several in a row over a short period then he'd have to prove that if HMRC were to get involved.

So as such theres no "limit" in that its not like he can do six a year and if he does seven hes a fraudster, more of a guideline after which HMRC would ask serious questions.

And how do any of us know he isn't declaring his income? Just because he works from home doesn't mean he's defrauding the state. Talk about melodramatic.

There's no limit also - what a load of carp.

Report to the council if you don't like it op. Or talk to him. But frankly most of the other comments on this thread are an over reacted and some just idiotic.
