Ok so I received a council home when I was young and had a baby (yes I no im really in for the insults now). My partner works his his butt off 6/7 days a week so we are now in a much better position. But its still not enough to be able to afford a mortgage! He is also in the position of being self employed. So I really really really do not understand what is so bloody bad about considering to get on the property ladder using the council house discount! Stuff your stupid morals!!!!
Thanks for all your advice, I will now let u all talk among yourselves about morals and how we should 'do whats right' for other people. Im sure people like me are the problem in this country, yeah right

So you can afford to cover the mortgage of the place u want to rent if you can't get tenants, but you can't afford a mortgage?

How on earth do u expect to buy the place if u can't afford the mortgage?!

I couldn't care less about your morals ( you've shown them already ). Your understanding of finances and financial commitments needs work. And I think you would make a terrible LL.

I also hope the council has the foresight to prevent this kind of system manipulation.

I also suggest if your child(ren) are of school age you enter employment and save up like responsible parents who teach their kids to rely on themselves and not the govt.

My only question for you is: when people like you suck up all the council houses and rent them out, and your daughter gets pregnant at 16 - where is she going live?

I'm not slating anybody on benefits - I'm slating the attitude you've shown.
  • Well as far as I was aware mortgage payments are every month and consequences of not paying them can be pretty bad. We are not at that stage yet. Tenants not paying is every so often and would have the money readily from not having to pay the mortgage for most of the time.

I defiantly know that my understanding of finances needs work, im 26 and im sure have a lot to learn. Thinking about other peoples families is not on my priority list.

Youngest child is not yet at full time school, another year left. And thank you but I did not ask for advice if I should go back to work when my children are at school. I think ive got that covered.
  • I don't have a daughter. What im trying to achieve in life is to have houses owned outright so my children will not have that problem

    Some basics for you:
1: you pay tax ( something you'll do when you go back to work) on rental income. The interest aspect of the mortgage is tax deductible. You may, MAY, have a small surplus after paying your mortgage ( if u can get one, as you say you can't afford it ), which will need to be saved for repairs and a 'new roof fund'. If your tenants stop paying rent, it could be 4-5 months before you evict them ( don't send Dave and the boys round unless you want your tenant to own 20k of your house ). So that's 4-5 months of mortgage payments you'll have to make. Not every so often. Throw in a new boiler, redecorating, paying letting agents, property getting trashed...

2: but you expect me to find your families progression up the ladder? Hmm...

3: somehow I doubt that. You come across very workshy.

Then go and work for it. What are you teaching your kids?

So you've benefited from social housing when you couldn't afford to rent privately, and now you want to buy a council house preventing others from having the opportunity you did? And make money for yourself in the process.
If your mother is going to leave her house to you one day anyway why can't you just wait for that? Or work harder and save up for a deposit and buy through the normal channels, like everyone else has to?
People like you make a complete mockery of the Right to Buy scheme.
  • Workshy or bringing up my kids?!? The fact that they never see there dad because he works so much is teaching them something. Also seeing there mum studying for when she goes back to work might count for something. Yes in a sense we are trying to go for the easiest option, but that's because the hard option seems too dam hard. I will take on board your points about becoming a landlord and will look into it

As a HA tenant are you even entitled to RTB? You probably have a long wait before being able to swap your HA home for a council property because of the number of people who have exercised their RTB. Oh the irony.
