Hi,
I have requested to change over from standard to Fibre broadband. All been booked in.
I need know how it will work. The master socket is currently in attic which is number years old.
I am right in saying that will be replaced? Can they put in anywhere I asked them or it has to be in the same place?
If not can they do extensions for the router to be placed wherever we like?
Thanks
MS

When I rang Plusnet to change over to Fibre. I did ask about extension but they said they no longer do it. So router has to be by the main socket.
Does the engineer normally have the extension kit or is it something needs to be pre-arranged before the visit with Plusnet.0 -
A lot of providers now go for the cheaper self install option for FTTC , and if that's what you got, then you won't see an Openreach engineer or a contractor working on their behalf, they just connect you up in the street cabinet, and it's up to you to do the rest, you probably need to ask Plusnet if you have a self install or a managed install0

I rang plusnet today. He did say someone will be coming to our premises. I asked for extension kit to be added to order. The order is already in progress so they cannot amend it now.
They said when engineer comes he might already have the spare extension kit alternatively I have to purchase data extension from PC World, email receipt and they will issue a refund/credit to the account upto £10.
Anyone know which data extension required. Can you provide any links?
Thanks

Also what is the difference between cat5 & cat6?

Hi, I did not get a reply - Will any of the above 2 should be ok for the extension? Thanks0 -
CAT6 has each pair twisted individually, so has better interference immunity.
All that quality is somewhat wasted because they have to use the standard Ethernet plug.
For short distance work, it makes little difference whether you get CAT6 or CAT5e. The price difference is negligible, so I always buy CAT6.
CAT5 is what we used to use for 10Mbps. For short distances, it will do 100Mbps, so use it if you have an old one lying around, but don't buy any more.0
