I've just re-read your original post to see if there is something we've missed.

I think I'm missing something -- a ring sold as, and described in print as, 18ct gold, and yet not hallmarked.

Do I remember correctly that there's an offence being committed there?

    Elvis re-enters the building! :D

I've bought unhallmarked antique jewellery and just taken it to a local independent jeweller for them to test that it was solid gold rather than plate - takes a couple of minutes. Not sure whether they can ascertain the carat value through this test though.

I do have a ring I purchased from new which is unhallmarked. It was a bespoke piece, made for a design show, and the jeweller didn't have time to send it to the assay office before the show. I don't know about the legality, but it doesn't bother me as I know the jeweller (as does my credit card provider!) and I'm confident that it is exactly as described.

Some items are exempt from Hallmarking..Or the ring could of been made and originally purchased in a country that doesn't have Hallmarking regulations.
  • BoP nw interrupts for the Hard of Reading.

OP, was taken to town by ex just before Xmas last. Suddenly, ex OH had a lightning bolt hit them, and instead if going to jeweller, went to cheap pawn shop, and bought a ring. OH then proposed to OP.

Between then and the now, Xmas has passed and it appears there is want of refund on ring, which pawn broker, being their business of a cash cow, has proffered a full refund.

It s unknown what happened over Christmas, but it seems OP and OH has split. It s unknown if children are involved, of if pink fluffy bunnies have been harmed.

Depends on the weight of gold in the ring.
