Was not advised of this before trip to collect.
Was told the assay office had been closed for two weeks-lie

Told if they have it on a Monday of a week they are going it will be be back to me on a Thursday

Return ring to be sent on 20 jan for me to collect on 21/22 jan

Arrange to collect on Saturday 24th

Had !!!!!! responses to my emails and don't want to go in to collect
But I don't trust them to post it and want to check the hallmarking is 18ct gold

You don't want to collect it.
    You don't want it posted.
    You don't want a refund.

    What exactly do you want?

Is the ring described as 18ct gold on your receipt?
Is the shop still trading, do they normally open on a Sunday?
    How did you/ he pay?

Your rights are for a full refund, to which they have agreed. It all depends if you love the ring enough to put up with the service they give.

But if you don't trust them to post it and you don't want to collect it, how exactly do you expect to get the ring?
  • I want to collect it ! Sorry I didn't mean that literally! Just feel like they hate me in there! They are a bit rude
The sunday thing isn't an issue I was just adding to the wider story
  • Paid cash and receipt says 18ct

You want to collect it and it is ready to collect. Would the simple solution be to collect it?

You've not been judged, you have been given your options - collect the ring or accept a refund.

I've just re-read your original post to see if there is something we've missed.

You mentioned compensation, and in the absence of anything else I can only assume that you are really asking if you are due any.

It is possible that you should be compensated for the cost of the extra trips to the shop that you have made.

Quantify your losses and put them to the proprietor.

The shop didn't even have to offer you a refund, unless:

It wasn't as described - ie not 18 carat
Or, the shops own terms and conditions state that they accept returned goods.

Not being hallmarked isn't necessarily a sign that jewellery is "dodgy" as a lot of 19th and early 20th century gold isn't marked.
