BT Cancellation charges

Hi there
Wonder if anyone could offer some advice on the nightmare that is BT.

I moved my BT account from my previous address a year ago, after over 18 months with them.
I'm moving again and have been told that to cancel I need to pay in excess of £250, which is obscene.
I don't understand to be honest how they've worked out that I started a new 18 month contract with them last year, but they won't budge, saying it was clear, which it evidently wasn't. The only suggestion is to move the account to my new address, which I can't do.

Has anyone had a similar issue and managed to get out of such a ridiculous charge?
I accept a cancellation charge of sorts, but this much is just a joke.
Thanks for any help!

Have you asked how they have come up with their charge?

When you moved and started a new contract what services did you sign up for ??.
Minimum term varies with product 12 months 18 months 24 months .
  • The contract is apparently 18months, so runs till October now for phone and broadband. The charges also don't tally up with the link that you suggested, so god knows how they magic a figure up.
When I asked the customer service guy didn't have a clue. Another reason why its hard to get anywhere fast with BT. He was simply adament there is no alternative.
While its still cheaper to pay the fee than keep paying each month, this is a crazy amount. Don't know how they get away with ripping people off when they don't provide sufficient information to start with.

9 Months to run for phone and broadband? That could account for over £200. You say you could not transfer your service to your new address so they have probably charged another £30 for cessation of service.

I was faced with a similar situation with BT and challenged them quite strongly: but they were intransigent. In the event I did not move so am staying with them for the rest of the contract. I will not be staying with them after the contract is up.

It is always possible they have made a mistake and you should investigate fully. When they are challenged they will spell out the full details and send you a copy of the agreement that was (allegedly) agreed to.

Reading that as moved and took out a broadband contract .Term 18 months is the same as on my contract taken out July 14 .
Noticeable that BT have recently offered some broadband on twelve month contracts .

It's not difficult to get close to that amount. If you're cancelling, there will be a cease charge of £30 for BB, that brings £250 down to £220. Assuming 10 months of the contract left, thats £22/month.
