uncollected direct debit resulting in reduced credit score

I continued with a direct debit with Anglian Water after they never sent me bills and allowed me to clock up a bill over £1000.!
When they finally sent me a letter last August I paid £500 immediately and agreed the rest be paid monthly by upping my DD.!
I ' had,' an unblemished credit score and applied for a loan at the weekend. Both my husband and I were declined!??!
We did an experian check to find out that Anglian Water have put 6 late payments on our account and a delinquency. To cut a long story short since August when I paid the 500 they have not collected the direct Debits.!
I have Spoken at length with them today and they are going to contact experian and take the negativity off. They have said it is their fault as for some reason they never took the payments.!
I want to know of I am also able to get compensation for this either via my direct debit guarantee or estoppel law?

Compensation for what exactly?
How has it affected you?
They made a mistake and now sorting it, get over it.
Equally, you should have noticed payments wasn't being made and that you haven't had a bill for a long time. You need to shoulder some of the blame for having little control over your financial affairs - decent financial planning means a- you know whats due and when b- you have money accumulated for bills as they fall.
As it stands you've basically kept your money earning interest for a long time, instead of them.
As for answering your question.... the DD guarantee isn't a compensation scheme. It just returns finds taken incorrectly, which isn't the case here.0 -
You clearly have no idea!
My credit score has gone from 990s to 550s. They are unsure if they can get the delinquency removed from that score. I am budget holder in several large accounts and now have the shame of sorting all this out with work.
This was the shortened version of AW second mistake so no this time I am not letting it go. And yes actually a direct debit is a guarantee that Debits will be paid which they have not!0 -
Your credit score is a number made up by the credit agency. Only they and you can see that number.
Actualy lenders will NEVER see it.
And you got it wrong about the DD guarantee. If they take money by mistake they guarantee that you will get it back.
Not a guarantee that the company will not forget to set it up properly.
When my car insurance failed to take the money i called them within days to query it and they had somehow forgot. You could have done the same with the water company. Chased them to see why they had not taken their money.

And yes actually a direct debit is a guarantee that Debits will be paid which they have not!
But to continue, have you read the Direct Debit Guarantee?
Here it is in full:Direct Debit Guarantee
The Guarantee is offered by all banks and building societies that accept instructions to pay Direct Debits
If there are any changes to the amount, date or frequency of your Direct Debit the organisation will notify you (normally 10 working days) in advance of your account being debited or as otherwise agreed. If you request the organisation to collect a payment, confirmation of the amount and date will be given to you at the time of the request
If an error is made in the payment of your Direct Debit, by the organisation or your bank or building society, you are entitled to a full and immediate refund of the amount paid from your bank or building society
If you receive a refund you are not entitled to, you must pay it back when the organisation asks you to
You can cancel a Direct Debit at any time by simply contacting your bank or building society. Written confirmation may be required. Please also notify the organisation.
So that just leaves 'estoppel law', doesn't it?0 -

If a squeaky clean credit record is that important to you, and if you're in charge of important budgets, why didn't you contact them when you had extra money in your household budget?
Sounds like 50/50 to me, they failed to set up the DD properly, you failed to keep abreast of your own finances.
Oh, and there is no compensation for a failed DD, only a refund for over payment and change of dates without notice. Don't know where you got that idea from? Strange that someone in your important financial role would imagine such a thing.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0
