I agree that ultimately it is the user's responsibility, but I have to say, to get by in this world you have to be pretty streetwise, and even have quite a bit of technical knowledge, eg to understand that overseas roaming costs are added on later, and then deduce from that that a call cap will not work.

I once had a big fright with T-mobile, and I always am really cautious. It was 3 or 4 years ago, I phoned up to ask the cost of data overseas. No one knew (it was a bit new then). I was told it would work out really cheap, I was given a figure by one really helpful man, who looked through all the manuals and agreed that it was very difficult to understand the complex pricing structure. We had a good friendly chat.

Went to Spain, used my laptop every day, great. Came home, and the bills started arriving... first £300, then another £70... I phoned T-mobile, they said no chance unless I could prove that I was given the advice.

I looked back through paper notes, found the time of my call, some details of the man I spoke to. All due credit to him, he put his hand up to it, phoned me up, he said he remembered the call too, and giving me the advice, he said he would sort it out. I was so grateful. He said he was near to retirement, and would not get into trouble for it. I got a full refund, thank god. They were not very happy about giving it to me though.

So unfortunately, in this life you have to learn to expect to be ripped of with hidden charges etc, and be consciously aware of pitfalls. Sad but true.
But there are still some nice people out there.
  • What happens to PAYG users abroad with very little remaining credit, if the cost of the call is not applied to the account for a number of days after the call was made/received?
