It is reassuring to hear some positive experiences of buying ex-Motability.

Now all I need is someone to tell me they had a good experience with Arnold Clark!

[I have found some positive stories online. It is almost impossible to avoid Arnold Clark in this area (Glasgow) as most of the cars for sale are from them]

  • Sometimes it's worth following a ex-Motability car at an auction. You can get really good prices doing that.

As AC is the biggest, independent car trader in Europe, they blanket the press with ads and the sheer volume of cars they turnover, some of them must be OK. A bit like eventually finding an ex-tradesman in B&Q who knows what he's talking about.
Strangely though, with complaints against car traders being so prevalent, "The Judge" in The Sunday Mail never seems to have a query from a disgruntled buyer. Perhaps it is all those four-colour pull-out ads AC places there.

All the Motability cars I've had, the service book was always stamped. On average, my car got serviced once in 3 years.

    Another reason to avoid them.

I have had 2 cars from AC and had no problems with them. I find them pretty much the same as all other dealerships I have been in. As long as you go in with your eyes open you will be fine.

Sorry you are wrong, only 2 can be named on the insurance without any cost, a 3rd driver can be on it but that comes at an additional cost. It says this on Motabilitys web site.

did i say it was 3 for free? NO..

My son bought an ex-motability car and it was definitely registered to a person, not motability.
We have never seen the V5 of any car she has had on the scheme, at least in the last 10 years or so (may have been different in the past, can't really remember). It's possible that her name is on the V5, but unlikely. Motability have always kept it. I know this because I was caught by a Gatso in her car, the police wrote to Motability, Motability wrote to my wife, and my wife dobbed me in. Typical.

The scheme supports servicing according to the manufacturer's schedule, which in most cases means an annual service on average mileage. The Ford garage we use send us a letter and back it up with a phone call when the services are due. I would imagine that Motability insist on this, as it affects the market value of the vehicle when they eventually get it back. I'm surprised they let you get away with that.

All the more reason to check all the documentation with any purchase.

New VW on Motabilty have 'long life oil', first service @ 18k.

Few will see 18k over 3 years, so a service when it goes for its first MOT, before its handed back?

Sister has one and the dealer said, on collection, that they wouldn't see her again!

18k or 12/24 months, whatever comes first.
