Wifi music receiver

I'm looking to connect my phone and laptop wirelessly to my existing hifi set up, which is an amplifier with the usual phono inputs. I have a cable, but it's irritating to have to leave the phone plugged in on the other side of the room, and there are interference beeps in every song.

I know the apple airport express does the job as it has a 3.5mm output, but that seems expensive for what I want at £70+.

I've seen a Neet box on amazon but I haven't heard of them so don't know what they're like. They're around £30.

Does anybody have one of these?

I've no idea about Neet, but I was in the same position a few months ago - wanting to get more out of my HiFi, by connecting it to my home network and the Internet.

I got a Raspberry Pi (£30), downloaded "MusicBox", connected a Phono cable from the Raspberry Pi to the HiFi Aux In.

I can now play my Spotify account, Internet radio stations, and my whole collection of MP3s in great HiFi sound.
Of course, I may just be talking b****cks!

Is this the sort of thing you are looking for?

I use mine to play music from my Windows phone through the tv audio and it works just fine.

Would the Pi not need a screen of some sort, at least to set up? And as far as I can see you'd also need a wifi adaptor for it?

Or are you just using the Pi to play the music that comes from the internet or your own network somewhere, and so not actually streaming from your phone?

That's the sort of thing, but I'd prefer to avoid bluetooth because it compresses the audio. I've heard wireless (in that it uses the wifi network) is better.
  • If you are now considering using your TV instead of hifi then try looking at a Chromecast.

Nope. Can't figure out how you inferred it either to be honest! Don't think I know of anybody who prefers the sound of their TV to a dedicated hifi system.
  • I inferred it as Gillor above suggested something that he/she uses for his/her TV audio and you said that is the sort of thing you wanted.

The device looks like it will do the sort of thing I'm after (apart from being Bluetooth) but I wouldn't plug it into the tv. The device linked to above has a 3.5mm output and USB so I'd simply use those connections to link up to the hifi system.
  • Hi Herbalus,

Yes, there are even cheaper 'Bluetooth to hifi adapters' on amazon (like £10)
I would say it's a good fit. Why don't you like the Bluetooth? I use BT to stream audio from my phone to a BT speaker. Means I can control the volume during dinner :)
  • How about this for a bluetooth receiver (it does the same as suggested by Gillor, but cheaper, and is rechargable):

Bluetooth doesn't reach as far. It also compresses audio so the quality of the sound is reduced. Not much point in having a set of decent speakers if you're going to reduce the quality of the sound with an inferior connection!
