I have only ever signed a couple of my cards as they as the ink always seems to come off. Though I have seen some people write with a permanent market "ASK FOR ID"

That being said, on trains they usually have to swipe it due to bad signal and then you have to sign. In which case they have always asked me for an ID which has my signature on it. Would have been annoying if i had forgotten to carry that ID with me!

PS: in conclusion ... i need to find a better pen

I cannot remember the last time I had to sign for something with a card, years and years.

I was shocked in the US they do not have this. or they did not when I was there.
  • I never did it and never had any issue.

As post no.5. I used my C.C. to purchase fuel a few weeks ago and the chip couldn't be read. It was necessary to use the "old" signature process to complete the purchase.
How dodgy would that have looked if my card hadn't been signed on the back?

I ended up doing this a few months ago. I just said ooopps its not signed, so I borrowed their pen and signed it in fromt of them before signing the paperwork for the transaction!:eek:

They didn't ask for ID or anything!

If it was not necessary it would not be there.

Not every retailer will have Chip & PIN or may occassionally use signature if there is an issue with their Chip & PIN.

Also if you were in the USA you would sign, Chip & PIN isn't used in the States and possibly other countries too.
  • In old days was necessary but now is not
  • Not all retailers use chip and pin.

It's necessary in the sense that an unsigned card isn't valid

It's not necessary in practical terms - most of the time - to use the card.

The merchant who accepted a card signed in his presence was breaking the rules and could have been liable if the transaction was fraudulent.

A few weeks ago I used mine for the first time for years in a shop and had a complete blank on the number. It could be have been awkward if it hadn't been signed.

Thanks for the reminder - I must sign the replacement I received a couple of weeks ago.
