  • Yes.

Not all retailers use chip and pin.

It is a condition of the use of the card.
  • If it is not signed then someone else can sign it and use it, some places allow you to sign instead of using chip and pin, especially if the card is stolen and taken abroad.

if the chip and pin system craps out and the retailer needs to revert to signature slip on the payment system then it is best to have a card with your signature on it otherwise the teller cant process the sale
  • I would think it depends on how you use it.

If, like me, you only use it for online purchases (eg. Amazon), then it won't matter if it is signed.

Most cards say "authorised signature-not valid until signed" so technically it is necessary.
All that glitters is not gold.
  • As post no.5. I used my C.C. to purchase fuel a few weeks ago and the chip couldn't be read. It was necessary to use the "old" signature process to complete the purchase.
How dodgy would that have looked if my card hadn't been signed on the back?

They'll probably just ask you for ID.

Just sign the thing. What's the problem in doing so? It only takes two seconds.
