Is a return ticket a MUST??

Please bear with me if i am asking stupid questions, i have never been abroad before.
I want to go abroad, in the EU, but i do NOT want to buy a return ticket, can i buy a 1 way ticket and not get asked questions of "What is your business here??" and "Why no return ticket??"
Obviously, i do not want to come back to the UK, and i will do anything to remain abroad, but i do not believe i could tell their airport/security staff that, or could i tell them that if i am a EU citizen myself, and have freedom of movement?

Of course you can tell them that - though they are rather unlikely to ask. You can stay anywhere in the EU for as long as you'd like.0 -

you need a valid passport to remain in France, im pretty sure you don't need that for Scotland.
as someone recently told me
