Reducing your car insurance after a fault accident

Hi, I had a fault claim on my car insurance last year. Basically I hit another car from behind. The total cost was £6193 including what was probably spurious injury claim from the driver of the car I hit. Anyway, my insurance went up to £430, from what was about £280 the year before. I used a comparison site to find cheaper insurance and came up with one which quoted £290 including breakdown recovery. I called my insurers and told them this and they dropped my premium to £311. After Googling the cheaper insurer (One Call) and reading dreadful reviews on the MSE forum I called my insurer back, Direct Line, and they honoured the £311 renewal price.

So basically what I'm saying if you've been a loyal customer with an insurer and your insurance goes up..... shop around and get back to them if premium quotes are lower. I saved £119 just by looking around. Good luck, Tom

If only there was a website that compared the prices of insurance and if only they advertised on tv so you knew about it. One can only dream....

The auto renewal quote is always bad. Just by making a call you can reduce your renewal. Btw. Even with a awful at fault accident yoiur premiums are decent. In my area of London a sparling clean driving record wtih 4 years NC you'll get premiums of £750.

When you call your existing provider and speak about your reneal they'll give you the default quote and say "how does that sound?", they're expecting you to contest that and upon contest they have another quote set out for you which can be £100 cheaper which is the new customer rate.

it's a bit ridiculous, it's like if they said "your renewal is £830, how does that sound?" you respond "my cat died", they'll reply "OK sir we can offer you £750 which is our lowest offer."

It's not really a reduction, rather it's reversing the lazy tax imposed on people who dont bother to call the insurer ahead of time and just auto renew.

Ouch, I hope you're either driving something exotic or you're a young driver.
  • It always amazes me on here how when someone drives into the back of a third party vehicle, the personal injury aspect of the claim is always "spurious" or a put on.

Tell me about it Straightalker. Why does everyone think that you will not be injured if hit from behind ? get hit by a car doing any speed at all and there is always a chance of injury. Doesn't matter where the car gets hit the risk is there.

even if they didnt claim PI your premiums would go up anyway.. so makes little difference to you if the claim was £1 or £10000

I was hit from behind almost three years ago and wasn't injured. However I was subsequently bombarded by phone calls both on my mobile phone and home phone from claims companies telling me I was entitled to injury compensation. Despite me telling them I wasn't injured they told me I was still entitled claim just by signing a form. I refused. Now, the guy I hit from behind I repeatedly asked him whether he had any discomfort or anything. He repeatedly said he was ok. In my original post I said "probably spurious." There is a distinct possibility he was then bombarded with call from claim companies and he accepted their offer.
