cheap but reliable car?

Hi, I am after getting a car. However, I don't work at the moment so money is tight, but once I have the car, I'll be able to become self employed
I need a car that is reliable, cheap on insurance, cheap on petrol etc.
Any ideas please?
It would be for mostly driving about town but also the occasional motorway journeys.

Budget?
Do you have 'realistic' expectations of an old car and its reliability and mpg?0 -
So something like a 1.3 yaris?0

Sorry, forgot to mention my budget
It would need to be under £8000 -
Few 1.3 Ford Ka's for £800.0

Cant go wrong with a Yaris. Sister's had her used one for 10 years.
Don't rate the KA's and such, all my mates have had their KAs scrapped - never lasted.0 -
I quite like Kas Justin, are they good runners?0

Aren't Yarises dearer than £800 though Smelly?0

I'd go for a Kia or Japanese.
Spending that sort of money you're basically buying a car that's a wreck so best to buy something cheap to keep on the road.0 -

Would have thought simple and reliable, but to be honest they were the newest and lowest mileage cars I found with a small engine on Autotrader.
I think it will be a weigh up of quality vs mileage/age.
There are cars I would prefer, yaris as mentioned, also Japanese, but £800 they would be a bit leggy/old.
Nearer a £1000 would help greatly I suspect0 -
Yep Generali, it won't be the best car out there for that kind of money that's for sure, but I need to get out on the road to be able to make more money, then I will be able to get something better.
I don't necessarily think it would have to be a wreck though.0
