Do cab drivers still have to carry a bale of straw in the boot?

The Licensing Act of 1872 explains that operating a cow or steam engine while intoxicated carries a prison sentence

I wonder if that still applies? Operating a cow, what if your married to said cow?

Anyone got an owner's manual explaining how to operate a cow? :p

Some used to carry a miniature one in the glove box.

Before the usual war starts, you should clear your roof of snow.

The Highway Code rule 229 suggests it
    Before you set off
    • you MUST be able to see, so clear all snow and ice from all your windows
    • you MUST ensure that lights are clean and number plates are clearly visible and legible
    • make sure the mirrors are clear and the windows are demisted thoroughly
    • remove all snow that might fall off into the path of other road users
    • check your planned route is clear of delays and that no further snowfalls or severe weather are predicted.
      Laws CUR reg 30, RVLR reg 23, VERA sect 43 & RV(DRM)R reg 11

The snow on the roof could be construed as an insecure load.

Now the reason I haven't cleared the snow off my roof is because it is frozen on. After 10 or 12 miles with the heater on it eventually unfreezes and comes away in big icy lumps that pummel the cars behind ( who are driving too close anyway :D)
If this caused a multicar pile-up due to someone swerving, and someone had my number (because I followed rule 229 and cleaned my rear number plate as The Law requires ;)) then I would be "in trouble".

However, as it is "kill or be killed" out there and I had no consience I could probably just keep going. (This would be leaving the scene of an accident that my vehicle was involved in though and is an offence that carries quite hefty penalties)

Apparently, in some foreign countries the clearing of ice/snow off the roof is enforced vigorously, due to a couple of high profile accidents over the years.

Imagine what happens when there is a lake of water an inch deep frozen on the roof of a lorry, that detaches in one lump when it reaches 55 on the motorway :eek:
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

You obviously have not had to recover vehicles after accidents cause by such idiots.

Neither have you. So don't talk nonsense.

Recovery driver for 6 years.... Callout money was good but some accidents have you phoning home at all hours.

I thought i had a strong stomach, But some of the recoveries were sickening.
