I realise that, even though their advisor recommended I do it. I really do not fancy them taking over £1000 with no clear timescale for getting it back though.

You are going to have a credit file problem if you don't do it properly, as I said earlier, you need to also phone 150 and pay the Bill you do owe, so the full amount for the other phone and then a little more than you expect the amount to be for this line, you must also tell the adviser to note on your account that you have disputed the incorrect amount and will reinstate the DD on production of a correct bill.

If you just cancel the DD and put your head in the sand you will find your phones suspended and the debt sent to a DCA. That way be dragons...

Cheers - I've no intention of burying my head in the sand and intend to manage it actively, but it is a matter of timing.

DD is due 5/2/15. I cancelled it online last night (2/2/15) and it warned that the cancellation will take two working days, so there is an outside chance it still goes through.

I intended waiting until the 5th when it is due to make sure it hasn't came off and phoning then to make a manual payment.

It is a good point about the remaining phone. I'm assuming they wont touch the EE ones. The 12 month sim-only contract is up on 28/2/15 so if they cut it off I could ask for a PAC code, effectively giving a months notice on that one.

It's a sad way to end what has been quite a decent relationship with T- mobile.

The problem with that is it has to be active to use porting so you wouldn't be able to use a PAC if it ends up cut off.

If you cancel it at your bank's end it takes effect immediately. However, cancelling ti at all may still be a bad idea.

My advice was the official T-Mobile policy for a disputed bill at the time I worked there, but it all has to be done, not just cancellation of DD. The account must be noted with the dispute and the part of the payment not in dispute must be made on time.

Just cancelling the DD with the bank is the bad idea.

Ok we've moved on a bit. An hour on the phone this morning and the billing issue has been resolved. A bill for almost £1100 has become £12 and I have a text message to confirm that.

My bank says I cannot reinstate my direct debit as it hasn't actually cancelled yet. However as soon as it shows cancelled online I can phone and reinstate it. Failing all that I'll make a manual payment on the 5th.

Good to hear, even if you pay by card and then reinstate the DD it won't cause any problems. It's good that their CS managed to resolve the problem before DD day.
