Paypal have reversed a payment

I recently sold an item for £260 on Ebay and recieved a payment which I then transfered into my bank account. Once the money had cleared I withdrew it and posted the item. Now, paypal tell me the payment was made on a stolen card and demand that I pay them back. Can they do that ? I thought once I had the money it was safe or I would'nt have posted it out. What is the point of using paypal if even when you've got the money they still can take it back !!! As you can guess I'm not happy

To protect yourself against this kind of thing happening, you should:
1. Check your buyer has a confirmed address
2. Check you qualify for seller protection
If either of these were missing on the transaciton in question, you are wide open to this happening: what has happened is the owner of the credit card used has reported the transaciton as fraudulent. If 1 and 2 apply, it's a lot easier to prove that it WASN'T fraudulent.
Your choices at this point are:
- Pay up
- Fight paypal and await harrassment from debt collectors, and never use your paypal account again.
If, on the other hand, you had a confirmed address AND seller protection, you have good grounds to appeal. Check the original payment.
I would also strongly suggest reading paypal's T&Cs thoroughly! My TV is broken!

Some scammer just tried to do this to me but to reverse payment himself. Luckily, I havn't sent the item yet. I'd keep the money if you sent the item. It's not your fault.0

well i thought that Paypal protects customers up to £500 so as you have posted an item you are at a loss - cant you play paypal at their own game and raise a "payment not received" claim, as technically you havent received payment?I never missed a payment :T , I paid off all my credit cards :T , I paid of all my loans :T , i have a work mobile :T - but am now "medium" credit risk0

This is the problem with using paypal.
In future use a payment method that cannot be reversed, cheques. postal orders or cash on collection...The money, Dave...0 -

i've had 2 paypal refunds (the only 2 claims i ever made) however admitedly mine was a slightly different case when items were not sent (or received by me anyway) so they refunded it after i escallated the case via the report a seller process. They were actually very hassle free... but low value ones at about £10 each.I never missed a payment :T , I paid off all my credit cards :T , I paid of all my loans :T , i have a work mobile :T - but am now "medium" credit risk0 -

Its illegal to harass anyone for debt in the UK. (Administration of Justice Act 1970)
Have a look at http://www.paypalsucks.com/ for some options. (although there options are usually don't pay and ignore the 'debt' collectors)
I have yet to hear of anyone ever being taken to court for a 'debt' against paypal. (doesn't mean they've never done it, just means I've never heard of a case :-)
Also report paypal to the Financial Ombudsman, just to annoy them.0 -

I've made 3, 2 items were not even sent and the other arrived lose in a box and smashed to bits (really), because the 2 who scammed me had the presence of mind to empty their accounts I got nothing, and because the dimwit who sent me a headlight lose in a box from australia had proof of postage I got nothing.
The didn't live up to the hype...The money, Dave...0 -

actually i do remember once when i bought something for about £30 and it hadnt arrived after 3 weeks - i logged a claim, looked at my summary page about 3 days later and the user was "no longer registered" . I cant remember if i got my money back but probably not on that occasion.
With the proof of postage you should have done a postal claim not paypal, if he had the receipt you might have been lucky and got insurance cover :rolleyes:I never missed a payment :T , I paid off all my credit cards :T , I paid of all my loans :T , i have a work mobile :T - but am now "medium" credit risk0 -

I'm not sure why you quoted me. Will it being illegal stop it happening?
I have no particular knowledge of the law - I'm just giving the reality. My TV is broken!
