Very slow fibre bband. What checks to make?

Hi I have fibre broadband with Talktalk.
It is vey slow at the moment ranging from 2.35 to 5.66 mbps.
We have often reached speeds of 30+ mbps. It has been very slow for a week or more.
I have contacted Talktalk and they have done phone and broadband checks and they are working fine.
They have arranged for an engineer to come out on Friday morning but I've been warned that I might have to pay £65 fees if we have caused the problem.
What checks can I do to make sure that I haven't done something wrong?

Have you touched any phone extension wiring?
Have you tested the speed wired rather than just wireless and found it to be slow.
If the answer to the first is NO and the second YES then it can't be your fault.0 -

I haven't tested the speed wired but will do that in the morning.
We did change the modem to the exact same one as we were getting very poor connection last November. It seemed to pick up until just before Christmas. I now remember a lot of buffering on Ebay when I was listing in the run up to Christmas.
Nothing else has been changed...... The wiring and lay out the same.

If you're connecting wirelessly which is seems you are, it could be interference of some sort. As above, test it wired into the router and let us know

Well checking wired is definitely necessary because a no fault found callout could well result in a charge.
I was a bit economical with the truth in my earlier post - a failed filter could cause issues but they are passive devices and failures are rare unless physically damaged and I'm sure you'k know about that.
Similarly adding a phone and forgetting a filter but you'd probably spot that pretty much immediately and associate the problem with the new addition.0 -

Ah... I have changed the phones in the last couple of months.
I have fibre optic and don't have any filters on any phones.
I have a main phone and the other hand sets are wireless and that only plug into the mains electric.
So where do I put the filter , and why didn't the engineer, installing the fibre, put a filter on the BT openreach box?
I thought that filters were built into the box??

If you have one of these attached to your socket, then this does contain a filter and will also filter any extensions coming off the main socket so no need to worry about that.

Yep, that's what we've got.....
down to 1.95 wired!!
I think that this has been slowing down for a good while and it has reached crunch point when my son bought a game yesterday and it was going to take 8+ hours to download.... they usually download in a few minutes.
What if the router has packed up will I have to pay for the call out charge and a new router?
