Aren't Bicycles Great.

Many vehicles can use the road without paying a penny. The term "road tax" is extremely misleading. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Justice For Cyclists strikes again.
A driver carries out a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre of a Renault Clio and a Camper van on a single lane road by driving into the oncoming traffic lane(worth noting the Clio had decided NOT to overtake the camper van as the driver thought it too dangerous).
Hit's a cyclist who is in the oncoming lane launching them over 30 metres and killing them.
Maximum sentence permitted? 14 years
Sentence passed down? 300 hours community service because the convicted is sorry for what he done and is very old... A Joke

Normally in cases like this I'd point out that although the maximum is 14 years, for this type of case it would be at the other hand however the starting point is three years in prison and the range of sentencing starts at two years so no prison at all is well beyond the guidelines. My only thought is that it was a lesser offence he pleaded guilty to rather than death by dangerous driving.
Either way it's the sort of case that is horrible to know about, I've never down a road century and was building up to do it last year but I had two really close misses that put me off entirely. I find most of the drivers on the road are good and give me room and clearly paying attention but it just takes one bad driver and it can all be over. I really feel for the family in this case and other similar ones, it must be terrible to lose someone like that then have this outcome.

Your belief that it is misleading doesn't stop it being a term that has firmly established itself in the English language as a term denoting a tax for using certain types of vehicles on a public highway, the way that Road Fund Licence and Vehicle Excise Duty will probably never achieve
And yet it is still not a tax to use the road as evidenced by the fact numerous cars can use the roads paying £0 VEDSam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Income Tax is a tax on income.
You'll be telling us next that as evidenced by the fact that there are many people who have an income but legitimately pay no Income Tax, there is no such thing as Income Tax.0 -
As much as I like my fat bike I've been fancying something a bit faster and softer at the front, I don't like the 29er anymore as it just feels too skinny so I've been fancying a 29+ bike for a while. I managed to get an ex-showroom Stache off Trek for a decent discount and it's in untouched condition, it has a clever rear design to allow it to keep short-ish chainstay despite the big wheels:
I've been thinking about it for a long time as I don't know if it will suit me and trying to avoid buying bikes I'm not going to use but it seems exactly what I want. It's a pretty flexible frame as well as it can take 29+, 27.5+, standard 29er, single speed and even a belt drive as the chainstay goes over the chain.
It's going to be a summer/trail centre bike though so won't be having it out for a while, I'll hopefully get the fat bike back tomorrow so it should be good to go once I sort out mudguards for it.

I got the mighty fat bike back from the shop today (local place were doing discounted Puffer servicing so thought I'd take them up on it) and it's barely recognisable...
