SORN it before you leave home, it takes a while to show on the system so you can check your status when you dop it off

Not quite as black and white as that is it? Apart from the non-transferability of existing VED, the new scheme at least finally offers a monthly payment option and the refund/re-tax system is exactly the same as it always was; lose non-full months, pay from the start of the month.

    Thanks for all the replies.

My situation is I am delivering the vehicle to the new owner this Saturday the 31st and he is paying for my shortish train journey home.

So in order for the robbing barstewards at the exchequer not to rodger one of us for a months tax for nothing am I right (from the advice above) that this is how I go about it?

    1. Drive car to new owner on the 31st
    2. Declare Sorn there and then by phone
    3. Fill in V5 dated 1st February
    4. New owner taxes vehicle on 1st February

Please come back afterwards and let us know if this is successful.

    Good luck, mate.

There is a party for low taxes? Must be a new party ive never heard of.

But my tax was the same prive before the DVLA change so where is the hidden rise?

All i can see is the DVLA being very busy on the last day and first day of the month.

I will be doing the same. SORN the old one on the last day and buy the new one on the 1st.

Yes but every time a car changes hands it is taxed by both parties for a month.

The market will soon catch on to the fact that it's an advantage to transfer vehicles at month end, don't you worry.

Either way, the amount I pay for my car tax hasn't changed, but I can earn a lot more before I pay tax than I could in 2010, so I am significantly better off than I was under the previous government.

Just thought I'd come back with an update.

I paid for my road tax via direct debit

I sold my vehicle on January 31st but dated the sale as February the 1st on the V5.
I then instructed the new buyer that I would sorn the vehicle in 2 hours time (enough time for them to drive home). After 2 hours I rang the DVLA and sorned the vehicle, which cancelled my road tax from the 31st

The new owner then taxed the vehicle on February 1st

My February tax direct debit was taken from my account on the normal day but 100% refunded 9 days later.

I assume this only works (nobody gets stiffed for a months tax they never used) if the sale is made on the last day of the month.
  • Some people are far to squeaky clean for their own good.

Sell car on 31st and put V5C in the post on the same day. You will get tax refund for the remaining months starting from the 1st.

New owner taxes car with V5C green slip to start from 1st. Who cares about a couple of hours.
