There's a word missing from the name. John Lewis Partnership. Employees are stakeholders of the business. So are rewarded for their own contribution to the success of the business.

There's a word (or three) missing from the name; John LewisPartnership plc, if you want to be really picky about it. And doesn't that mean that Apples should be given extra bonus points for distributing profits to its employees voluntarily?

That would be down to the owners of said businesses. JLP exists because John Spedan Lewis, who owned John Lewis decided to give it away.

No, apple do not make better products.

Im no Apple fanboy, and I don't buy Apple products, but have used plenty along with the top android products. There is no doubt, Apple products perform better, often with equal or inferior hardware simply because the software and hardware are so well integrated and designed to work together. The software is also simple and restricted, which makes it perform so seemlessly. I personally prefer to customise so went with Android, but I realise that this comes with a cost to performance.

Plus once you have the Apple products it is hard to switch. I myself am the same with Android, all my things are Google - email, Drive, Youtube, Chrome. There is no way I will buy a non-Android product now, transferring systems will just be way too much effort.

Apple deliver a great service to customers, just like Google do, and customers that choose the premium product are not brainwashed, they simply prefer to use the best. In the grand scheme of things, an iphone might cost you an extra £5-10 a month on contract. Its loose change.
Faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

    Yep. Absolutely tragic.

I note people are refering to BMWs, Audi's etc to make the comparison.

Theres a huge difference though. The photo above paints the picture. But for those still left confused, it's the fact that there aren't huge numbers of stories of the terrible working conditions for those putting thogether said cars. Neither do they make the same sort of profits. They also appear to pay their taxes.

For those still confused, it's a picture of a Foxconn factory. They supply components to a whole range of brands like Blackberry, Sharp, Nintendo, Amazon (Kindle), Sony Playstation, Xbox, Samsung, Apple, Panasonic...etc...etc...
I assume your moral outrage extends to all those brands?
Don't blame me, I voted Remain.

Sorry I don't see the issue tax avoidance is perfectly legal and the government pushes plenty of tax avoidance schemes - pensions, is as etc. As a small company we've just invested a lot of money in an it system for which we can get 150% back on our corporation tax. Thus reducing our bill to £0 assuming we make a profit. We wouldn't have invested as much with out the tax back.

Not to mention that if you take a million employees (?) like Foxconn then you will have a bunch of people with mental health issues and sadly suicide is a symptom of mental illness.

Foxconn will also employ a huge number of alcoholics, transsexuals, BDSM enjoyers, frustrated artists, guitar players and car thieves.

I can afford Apple products and until recently had an iPhone 5s.

I like Apple. It certainly does work well and cannot fault it on functionality.

Inevitably what put me off in the end was the lack of variety of phone models to choose from (I switched before the 6 came out, but even still two sizes isn't enough 'variety for my liking), and the lack of any sort of 'widgets' on homescreens - i.e. you can only look at icons, and have to open apps to see detail. I like to have a simple calendar on the home screen and a few other bits that tell me all my need to know info at a glance without entering multiple apps.

I personally prefer the variety and customisation options that Android offers, and the Google packages (gmail, drive, Google Now, google docs, etc) seem to work very well for seamless integration across my phone and non-Apple PC, so I'm happy where I am for now.

I've never understood the fanboy war. Just buy the device that suits your needs the best and stop worrying about what other people think. The other fanboy war that drives me crazy is Xbox One vs. PS4. They are both incredible machines, and at the end of the day the only real deciding factor between them is your personal preference of excluive games and whichever console is most popular amongst the group of friends you are likely to want to play with.

I'd estimate the figure to be approximately £0.

It's a US company. So ultimately its profits fall to be taxed within that jurisdiction. Apple's tax 'avoidance' largely consists of the decision not to repatriate profits to the USA, where corporation tax is quite high.

    Simply wrong.

Almost the entire OECD tax system is based on the premise that tax should be paid in the country where profits are earned.

However, all of all Apples non-USA profits are routed through Cork, Ireland and manage to not even pay the Irish rate of 12.5%, but closer to 2%.

The specific tax dodge the Apple use even has it's own name the "double irish" - and laws to try and prevent it started this month (we shall see how that goes).

Although the USA does have the highest headline rate (39%), the actual tax rate for USA corporations in 2011 was 12%
